The research assistant provides technical support for the core imaging facilities in the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences (CNMS). Duties include providing assistance in training instrument users on a range of optical and electron microscopes, the execution of fee-for-service imaging projects and maintenance of instruments as well as administrative tasks. This position requires basic microscopy experience that demonstrates an interest and ability to learn a variety of microscopy techniques. This position will ensure that the imaging facilities are able to maintain their high standard of research support.
UMBC offers competitive compensation. This role starts at $56,000 and has over 4 weeks of vacation for regular full time roles. Tuition remission is also available.

- Train users in specimen preparation and instrument operation.
- Maintain instruments and laboratory equipment.
- Execute client experiments, including specimen preparation and image acquisition.
- Support administrative tasks such as SOPs, recordkeeping, and supply ordering.
Education: Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, engineering, or field of study related to the research of the laboratory.
Experience: One year of direct work experience operating an optical or electron microscope. Consideration may be given to a unique combination of equivalent knowledge and practice of microscopy theory and operation through either classroom instruction or research experience.
Ability to perform essential duties independently with attention to detail. Possess effective time management skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks or projects to meet established deadlines. Must also possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and a commitment to exemplary customer service.
A working knowledge of microscopy fundamentals, best practices and sample preparation techniques. Teaching and/or training others to use scientific instruments. Instrument maintenance, including cleaning, alignment, and quality control. Image processing and analysis.

Salary: $56,000 - $63,000 depending on qualifications and experience.
