Duties and Responsibilities: 

(** denotes essential functions):

  1. **Network Switching & Infrastructure Support: Assist in the provisioning, configuration, and physical deployment of Cisco and Aruba switches across campus facilities; perform routine VLAN assignments, port security configurations, and firmware updates; and maintain physical layer infrastructure, including cabling standards and rack-mounting equipment in data closets.
  2. **Unified Communications & VoIP Management: Manage day-to-day administration of the Mitel VoIP system for the college campus; handle user onboarding (MACDs: Moves, Adds, Changes, Deletes), handset troubleshooting, and softphone configuration; and monitor SIP trunking and voice quality metrics to ensure reliable communication services.
  3. **Cybersecurity Operations & Threat Response: Monitor the Sentinel One console to triage automated endpoint alerts; perform initial investigation of detected threats and assist in endpoint isolation or remediation; utilize FortiAnalyzer to review network logs and investigate suspicious traffic patterns; and support compliance with University IT security policies through regular auditing of network access.
  4. **Virtualization & VDI Management: Manage the daily operations and maintenance of the Nutanix Acropolis Hyper-Converged Infrastructure (HCI); monitor cluster health and performance; and administer the Citrix VDI system to ensure reliable delivery of virtual desktops and applications to University users.
  5. **Staff Oversight & Project Coordination: Coordinate IT project efforts and provide technical oversight, guidance, and daily work direction to other IT staff, student technicians, and applicable vendors; manage student schedules and assign tasks related to network maintenance or deployment; and review completed work for quality assurance and adherence to University standards.
  6. **Technical Support & Consultation: Provide Tier 2 technical support for complex network and connectivity issues escalated from the IT Help Desk and consult with the primary UHMC IT network engineer and/or the ITS networking department to address issues and implement specialized network configurations.
  7. **Monitoring, Documentation & Reporting: Perform routine health checks on network connectivity using enterprise monitoring tools to ensure high availability for academic and administrative units; maintain and update network diagrams, IP address management (IPAM) databases, and system runbooks; and contribute to teams' weekly security and performance reports for IT leadership.
  8. Innovation & Professional Development: Develop and experiment with new ideas, techniques, and applications to increase job productivity and efficiency; keep abreast of advances in information technology; and assess the feasibility of incorporating new technologies into project plans and specifications.
  9. **Follows and implements directives and guidance related to best practices from the University of Hawai'i System Information Technology Services.
  10. **Ensures the consistent adoption, implementation, and enforcement of recommendations issued through the University of Hawai'i System Information Technology Service.
  11. **Keeps abreast of recommendations issued through the University of Hawai'i System Information Technology Service, and takes timely action as needed.
  12. **Continuously monitor and lead initiatives to enhance system reliability, security, and operational efficiency. Supervise and mentor IT staff to ensure that administrative directives and industry best practices are understood and followed.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Professional Work Experience:
  • Possession of a pertinent baccalaureate educational degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Information & Computer Sciences and three (3) years of progressively responsible professional information technology experience with responsibilities for applications development, of which 2 years of the experience must have been comparable in scope and complexity to the next lower pay band in the University of Hawai'i broadband system; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated. 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Considerable working knowledge of Information Technology as demonstrated by the broad knowledge and understanding of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving information technology concepts, principles, and methodologies.
  • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of the broad technology, systems, hardware, and software associated with Information Technology.
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize a wide range of intricate problems, use reasoning and logic to determine accurate causes, and apply principles and practices to determine, evaluate, integrate, and implement practical and thorough solutions in an effective and timely manner.
  • Proven ability to comprehend, interpret, and implement administrative directives and guidance to ensure IT operations align with organizational standards and industry best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally, and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  • If applicable, for supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.

Supplemental Minimum Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of IT service management, cybersecurity principles, risk management, and compliance requirements. Demonstrated experience implementing and maintaining IT best practices, standards, and governance.

Desirable Qualifications:

  1. Technical Knowledge: Foundational understanding of the OSI model, TCP/IP suite, DNS, DHCP, and basic routing protocols (OSPF, BGP); basic knowledge of VLAN tagging (802.1Q) and IP subnetting; functional familiarity with the University of Hawaii wireless environment (UH Wi-Fi), including the use of university tools for VIA access, passthrough management, and visitor sponsorship; and familiarity with Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, Android, and iOS operating systems.
  2. System Familiarity: Prior experience or familiarity with Nutanix Acropolis (HCI), Citrix VDI, Mitel telephony systems, Sentinel One EDR, Fortinet/FortiAnalyzer, Ninja One, Action1, UH Identity Management (IAM), and Microsoft AD user management.
  3. Data Management & Auditing: Proficiency in using Sea Table, Google Sheets, and Microsoft Excel for managing technical data; experience performing complex data verification, multi-set data joins, and comprehensive audits of large record sets.
  4. Analytical Skills: Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues and follow systematic investigative processes for security threat mitigation.
  5. Communication: Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to explain technical networking concepts clearly to a diverse university community of faculty, staff, and students.
  6. Supervisory Potential: Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, or provide technical guidance to team members or student assistants in a professional environment.
  7. University IT Familiarity: Knowledge of University of Hawaii infrastructure and policies, or previous experience working in a higher education IT environment.
  8. The ability to apply knowledge of Native Hawaiian culture to effectively collaborate with multicultural groups and individuals from diverse academic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
