Other Conditions: Pending final position clearance. To begin approximately November  1, 2025 or as soon as possible. Work location will be at the JABSOM Pacific Cancer Program office in Kaka’ako, with occasional travel to American Samoa or the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Reappointment is conditional on continued eligibility and satisfactory performance as a GA. Assistantships may be terminated before the end of the appointment period due to the GA’s inability to complete assigned tasks, misconduct, failure to meet the requirements listed above, lack of funding, or by mutual consent. GAs who resign before serving a minimum of three-quarters of a semester are liable for repayment of the tuition exemption.

Position Description: The Graduate Assistant (GA) staff will hold a temporary position (11 months) providing support to the JABSOM FMCH PCP investigators working on this “Pacific Islands Healthcare and Health Policy Landscape Assessment” and related PCP projects, in conjunction with other GAs and investigators from the UHM Center for Pacific Island Studies and the UH Rural Health Research and Policy Center. 

The GA primary duties and responsibilities will be:

  • Assist the faculty investigators and key Pacific Cancer Program staff in conducting an expansive “literature” review of current healthcare and health system capacity, including barriers and promoters, which includes, but is not limited to, the following sources of information: academic literature, international, regional, national, and local reports, media, capacity-building assessments and reports, human resource infrastructure reports, and federal/state/local policies

  • Assist with conducting the system mapping for AS and the CNMI

  • Work closely with the local community liaisons in AS and the CNMI to coordinate and participate in virtual and in-person stakeholder engagement sessions

  • Contribute to developing technical reports and policy briefs, and other written or audio-visual (presentation) materials needed to support the project

  • Assist the Principal Investigator by supporting additional programmatic, research, or policy, system, and environmental (PSE) activities in close partnership with the key stakeholders based in or serving the US-Affiliated Pacific Island jurisdictions.

  • Travel to American Samoa and the CNMI (US jurisdictions) for stakeholder assessment meetings

  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Full-time classified graduate student (Master's or PhD program) in good academic standing in any discipline at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa

  • Ability to understand oral and written documentation, follow through with instructions, and meet stated deadlines

  • Willingness to learn new techniques or tools for qualitative research (i.e., NVivo)

  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills, especially in team-based projects

  • Demonstrated ability for some independent work

  • Ability to utilize remote teleconferencing technology (i.e., Zoom)

  • Must meet the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa Graduate Division Graduate Assistant Eligibility requirements.

  • Must be able to obtain a valid passport and travel without restriction to American Samoa and the CNMI.


Desirable Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with the different US-Affiliated Pacific Islands (USAPI) cultures and unique geopolitical contexts

  • Familiarity with portions of the USAPI healthcare infrastructure 

  • Advanced knowledge and utilization of word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation/multimedia software such as Canva, and software that is part of the Microsoft Office and Google Suites 

  • Familiarity with EndNote or similar reference management software

  • Demonstrated interest in risk factors and interventions to reduce the incidence and prevalence of chronic diseases in the USAPI, including but not limited to overweight, obesity, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, and cancer

  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize information from various sources and clearly present it verbally and in writing to a variety of audiences
