Other conditions: This is a legislatively budgeted temporary position with secured funding through June 30, 2027. Continuation of this position beyond that date is dependent upon funding availability.


Assistant Professor - Duties and Responsibilities 

Teaching: 20%

  • Teach courses and instruct UH learners, faculty, and community members in biostatistics, quantitative health sciences, and related disciplines as they apply to healthcare.
  • Serve as academic advisor to graduate students in Quantitative Health Sciences
  • Participate in curriculum development, including creation of course materials and specialized instructional methods
  • Supervise independent study activities and serve on graduate thesis committees

Research: 60%

  • Assist the Principal Investigator (PI) and collaborators in developing curriculum, training tools, and resources for implementing, evaluating, and communicating topics in biostatistics, statistical analysis, and quantitative health sciences
  • Conduct statistical methodology research and publish methodological and collaborative findings in high-quality peer-reviewed journals
  • Provide comprehensive research design and biostatistical support and collaboration to university faculty, staff, and healthcare partners
    Collaborate on research grant development, serving as a research methodologist or biostatistician

Service: 20%

  • Attends JABSOM faculty professional development sessions and department meetings
  • Participate in community engagement activities, independently or in collaboration with other JABSOM departments and healthcare community partners
  • Serve on department, school and university committees
  • Serve on committees responsible for evaluating graduate program candidates for advanced degrees
  • Provide professional and community service in areas related to biostatistics and quantitative health sciences
  • Other related duties/tasks as assigned


Associate Professor - Duties and Responsibilities

Same as Assistant Professor with the additional responsibilities below:

  • Establish and strengthen partnerships with healthcare providers, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations to promote workforce engagement and build sustainable career pipelines for students pursuing roles as biostatisticians or data analysts in the healthcare sector
  • Lead collaborative initiatives with universities, research institutions, healthcare partners, and government agencies to advance workforce development in biostatistics and quantitative health sciences
  • Secure funding from federal and state agencies, private foundations, and healthcare partners to support research, training, and related initiatives
  • Supervise Biostatistics Core Facility graduate research assistants, providing clear goals, performance evaluations, and constructive feedback

Assistant Professor Minimum Qualification:

  • Terminal doctoral degree (PhD or equivalent) in biostatistics, statistics, quantitative health sciences, or a closely related field from an accredited institution of recognized standing
  • Demonstrated ability in teaching, student evaluation, scholarship, and program administration
  • Ability to serve as a professional role model for students and junior colleagues
  • Demonstrated research or scholarly experience in biostatistics, statistics, quantitative health sciences, or related areas
  • General knowledge of fundamental biostatistical concepts and terminology
  • General knowledge of federal research funding mechanisms, including budgeting processes
  • Demonstrated skills in research design, data management, and statistical analysis using standard and advanced statistical tools
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience using statistical software, R or SAS programming languages
  • Training or experience in statistical methods such as experimental design, multiple regression, longitudinal data analysis, survival analysis, logistic regression, and categorical data analysis
  • Demonstrated professionalism and effectiveness in meeting, conferring, and collaborating with others
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in multicultural, multinational, and multi-level environments
  • Demonstrated active engagement and sustained interest in research and scholarship, as evidenced by recent publications, conference presentations, research mentorship, participation in professional or academic societies, or other scholarly activities that reflect an ongoing commitment to the discipline

Assistant Professor Desirable Qualifications:

  • At least two (2) years of postdoctoral experience in biostatistical consulting and collaboration, as evidenced by interdisciplinary research, co-authored work, community or institutional partnerships and contributions to collaborative grant proposals or team-based scholarly projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to a collegial and collaborative academic environment through shared research, mentoring, and/or service initiatives.
  • Experience working within an organized biostatistical collaborative group in an academic medical center setting
  • At least one (1) year of postdoctoral teaching experience in biostatistics


Associate Professor Minimum Qualifications:

  In addition to those of Assistant Professors, minimum qualifications include
  • Minimum of four (4) years of service as an Assistant Professor
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring and guiding students in data analytics or biostatistics pathways
  • Demonstrated record of establishing a scholarly profile through independent and collaborative research, publications, and grant activities

Associate Professor Desirable Qualifications:

 In addition to those of Assistant Professors, desirable qualifications include
  • At least four (4) years of working on health research focusing on population in Hawaii, including Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander.
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals in biostatistics, statistics, quantitative health sciences, or related field
  • Demonstrated experience with curriculum development and evaluation
  • Demonstrated ability to obtain and manage extramural funding
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a biostatistics core group
