Overview

The Nurse Manager, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), provides operational, clinical, and strategic leadership for a high-acuity critical care environment. This role is accountable for the daily operations of the ICU, ensuring the delivery of safe, evidence-based, patient-centered care while fostering a culture of excellence, accountability, and professional development.

The Nurse Manager oversees clinical and support staff, manages departmental resources, drives quality and performance improvement initiatives, and ensures compliance with organizational, state, and federal regulatory requirements. Working collaboratively with physicians, nursing leadership, and interdisciplinary teams, the Nurse Manager promotes exceptional patient outcomes, employee engagement, and operational efficiency.

Responsibilities

Clinical and Operational Leadership

  • Direct and oversee the daily operations of the Intensive Care Unit.
  • Ensure delivery of high-quality, evidence-based nursing care that meets established clinical, quality, and safety standards.
  • Monitor patient care outcomes and implement strategies to improve quality, patient satisfaction, and operational performance.
  • Maintain compliance with regulatory agencies, accreditation standards, and organizational policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, and interdisciplinary teams to optimize patient care and throughput.

People Leadership

  • Recruit, hire, develop, coach, mentor, and retain a high-performing nursing team.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, provide ongoing feedback, and implement corrective action when appropriate.
  • Support employee engagement, professional development, succession planning, and leadership growth initiatives.
  • Partner with nursing education and clinical leadership teams to ensure effective onboarding, orientation, competency validation, and continuing education.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, respect, and professional excellence.

Financial and Resource Management

  • Develop, manage, and monitor departmental operating and labor budgets.
  • Ensure appropriate staffing levels and resource utilization to support patient care needs and organizational goals.
  • Monitor productivity, overtime, supply utilization, and other key financial metrics.
  • Identify opportunities for cost containment while maintaining high standards of patient care and employee satisfaction.

Quality and Performance Improvement

  • Lead quality improvement, patient safety, and regulatory readiness initiatives.
  • Utilize data and key performance indicators to drive clinical and operational excellence.
  • Participate in root cause analyses, action planning, and performance improvement projects.
  • Promote evidence-based practice, nursing research, and innovation within the critical care environment.

Qualifications

Required Education

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited nursing program.

Preferred Education

  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or a related field.

Required Licensure and Certifications

  • Current Florida Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification through the American Heart Association.

Preferred Certifications

  • National specialty certification in Critical Care Nursing or Nursing Leadership (CCRN, NE-BC, CNML, or equivalent).

Experience

Required

  • Minimum of three (3) years of recent critical care nursing experience.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of leadership experience as a Charge Nurse, Assistant Nurse Manager, Clinical Coordinator, Supervisor, or equivalent leadership role.

Preferred

  • Progressive leadership experience within an acute care or critical care setting.
  • Experience managing budgets, staffing, quality metrics, and regulatory compliance initiatives.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong leadership, team-building, coaching, and mentoring skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead change and drive organizational initiatives.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of critical care standards, patient safety principles, and evidence-based practice.
  • Understanding of accreditation and regulatory requirements, including Joint Commission standards.
  • Proven conflict resolution, negotiation, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to analyze operational and financial data and implement effective improvement strategies.
  • Ability to function independently while collaborating effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
