Our Maternal/Fetal Medicine department in UConn Medical Group is looking to hire a full-time Diagnostic Medical Sonographer 1 or 2. If you have a background in this field, we want to hear from you.

At UConn Health Center this classification is responsible for providing diagnostic patient care services through the independent operation of sonographic equipment, and performing and communicating results of diagnostic examinations using sonography.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Individuals appointed in this classification initially performs procedures under limited supervision and independently with gained experience.

  • Promotion to Sonographer 2 is based upon attaining level 2 requirements (certification in at least two modalities and two [2] years sonography experience) and a documented satisfactory performance.

Works under limited supervision of an employee of higher grade

DIAGNOSTIC MEDICAL SONOGRAPHER 2:

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

May lead lower level as assigned.

DIAGNOSTIC MEDICAL SONOGRAPHER 1:

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Performs clinical assessment and diagnostic sonography examinations, integrating pertinent patient history and supporting clinical data to facilitate optimum diagnostic results.

  • Performs sonographic examination as ordered by physician using cognitive sonographic skills to identify and accurately differentiate between normal and pathologic conditions.

  • Performs quality assessment, analyses sonograms, synthesizes sonographic information and medical history, and communicates findings to the appropriate physician or according to established protocol.

  • Addresses problems of patient care as they arise and makes decisions to appropriately resolve the problems.

  • Assumes responsibility for the safety and physical comfort of patients while they are in the Sonographic area/department [in your care].

  • Prepares technical findings and contacts physician when required, according to established protocol.

  • Maintains daily log of patients seen, keep track of patients' records.

  • Maintains imaging equipment and promptly reports equipment failures to appropriate personnel; maintains work area.

  • Assists with the daily operations of the sonographic laboratory, such as efficient patient flow, adequate availability of supplies, and performs related clerical duties as required.

  • Establishes and maintains ethical working relationship with healthcare team.

  • Maintains technical competency through continued education and participates in training programs.

  • Performs other related duties as required.

DIAGNOSTIC MEDICAL SONOGRAPHER 2:

ADDITIONAL EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Participates in the maintenance of laboratory accreditation.

  • Assists in the training of Radiology students during clinical rotation.

  • Provides in-service education as requested by other members of the health care team.

  • Coordinates scheduling and patient flow.

  • Orient new Technologist and provide education and training as required/assigned.

  • Coordinates with other staff to assure appropriate patient care is provided.

  • Assists in teaching sonography to new physician, residents and fellows

  • Assists in the development of new ultrasound techniques and protocols.

  • Participates in ultrasound research practices.

  • Acts as team lead or in a leadership capacity on an as needed basis.

  • Ensures correct charges of procedures and supply on a daily basis.

  • Maintains technical competency through continuing education and participates in training programs.

  • Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Considerable knowledge of general physics, biological science and algebra.

  • Knowledge of sonographic equipment and procedures.

  • Considerable knowledge of infectious disease procedures and safety precautions.

  • Skills in social perceptiveness, learning strategies, critical thinking skills, active listening, instructional skills, reading comprehension and written/oral expression skills.

  • Considerable interpersonal skills.

  • Good hand-eye coordination.

  • Detailed oriented.

  • Ability to communicate effectively (oral and written) with patient and health care team, recognizing the special nature of sonographic examinations and patient's needs.

  • Ability to integrate diagnostic sonograms, laboratory results, patient history and medical records and adapt sonographic examination as necessary.

  • Ability to use independent judgment to acquire the optimum diagnostic sonographic information in each examination performed.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and health care team; ability to recognize the difference between normal and abnormal images and other diagnostic information.

  • Ability to operate and navigate computerized clinical systems (e.g. EPIC) and office applications [e.g. Microsoft Office suite];

  • Ability to work efficiently and cope with emergency situations.

GENERAL EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

DIAGNOSTIC MEDICAL SONOGRAPHER 1:

Graduate of a formal Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

DIAGNOSTIC MEDICAL SONOGRAPHER 2:

Two [2] years of diagnostic medical sonography experience.

REQUIRED LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY:

DIAGNOSTIC MEDICAL SONOGRAPHER 1:

  • Must possess and maintain during employment Registry in at least one specialty by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or certification/registry in Sonography with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist [ARRT].

  • May be required to possess and maintain during employment Basic Life Support (BLS) certification as deemed necessary by either the JDH Hospital Administrative Manual or UMG work unit.

DIAGNOSTIC MEDICAL SONOGRAPHER 2:

  • Must possess and maintain during employment registry by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) in multiple specialties [at least two, RDMS, AB, OB/GYN, etc.], or registry with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist [ARRT] in Sonography.

  • May be required to possess and maintain during employment Basic Life Support (BLS) certification as deemed necessary by either the JDH Hospital Administrative Manual or UMG work unit.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Emotional and physical health sufficient to meet the demands of the position.

  • Ability to maintain prolonged arm positions necessary for scanning.

  • Strength sufficient to lift patients who need assistance; move heavy equipment on wheels and to move patients in wheelchairs and stretchers.

  • May be required to stand for long periods.

  • May be exposed to infectious/communicable diseases.

SCHEDULE: Full-time, 40 hours per week, 8-hour shift between the hours of 7:30 am to 6:30 pm. May be required to travel.
