Supervises and instructs children aged six (6) weeks through preschool with a program designed to stimulate cognitive, emotional, physical, and social growth in a safe, caring environment.

This position is NOT a preschool position as there are teachers who have set rooms for the school year, but this position may at times cover in preschool. This position may cover other rooms for vacations and callouts, and there are times at the beginning and end of day that teachers help in other rooms due to numbers/ratios. The needs for teacher placement are evaluated each year.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the general supervision of the Head Childcare Teacher, Center Director or an employee of higher grade.

SCHEDULE:

This position is full-time, 40 hours per week, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm with a 60-minute unpaid meal break. The Creative Child Care department is open all year and closed for 6 major holidays. The facility will remain open on inclement weather days.

Examples of Duties:

Establishes and maintains a safe, healthy learning environment by:

  • Implementing developmentally appropriate curriculum and instruction practices based on knowledge of individual children and curriculum goals.

  • Creating and modifying environment to meet the specific needs of all children, including children with disabilities, developmental delays, and special abilities.

  • Maintaining a physically and psychologically safe and healthy learning environment.

Supports social and emotional development and provides positive guidance by:

  • Observing and guiding child's behavior.

  • Supporting the development and learning of individual children.

Establishes and maintains positive and collaborative relationships with families by:

  • Communicating with parents/guardians about curriculum and children's development.

  • Demonstrating sensitivity to differences in family structures and social and cultural backgrounds.

Maintains a commitment to professionalism by:

  • Establishing and maintaining positive, collaborative relationships with colleagues, other professionals, and families, and working effectively as a member of a professional team.

Ensures a well-run, purposeful program responsive to enrollee's need by:

  • Observing, recording, and assessing child's development for the purpose of assisting in the planning of appropriate programs, environments, and interactions. Maintaining staff child ratios in compliance with state regulations.

Actively seeks out opportunities to grow professionally by locating and using appropriate professional literature, organizations, resources, and experience to inform and improve practice.

Performing other related duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIRED

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY:

  • Knowledge of theory and practices necessary to plan and implement curriculum for individual children and groups.

  • Knowledge of child development.

  • Ability to communicate effectively (written and oral) and good interpersonal skills

  • Problem sensitivity - ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong.

  • Basic mathematical ability.

  • Ability to work as part of a team.

  • Creative thinking.

  • Speech recognition - ability to identify and understand the speech of others.

  • Basic medication and CPR knowledge.

  • Ability to respond to the needs of children from the broad diversity of cultural backgrounds

EDUCATION AND TRAINING:

Associate Degree in Early Childhood/Child Development.

OR, High School Diploma with Childcare Development Associate (CDA) certification or equivalent and at least six months experience in a childcare environment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Incumbents in this class must complete and maintain First Aid and CPR certifications and medication training and be responsible for obtaining state licensing required continuing education units.

In compliance with NAEYC guidelines, you must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in early childhood education, child development, elementary education, or early childhood special education; or a bachelor's degree with at least 36 credits in early childhood education, child development, elementary education, or early childhood special education.

  • Two (2) or more years of experience in a NAEYC accredited childcare program working with children ages 6 weeks to 5 years.

  • Knowledge of and experience with CT ELDS, DOTS, and NAEYC standards and criteria.

  • Ability to update and maintain NAEYC classroom portfolio.

  • Independently implement curriculum.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Incumbent in this class may be required to lift children and may be exposed to some infectious/communicable diseases.
