Job Summary

The Integrated Teaching and Learning Program (ITLP) in the College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) is seeking an Engineering Projects Consultant! This position provides functional, operational, and instructional support to engineering students, staff, and faculty across all levels and subject areas. The Engineering Projects Consultant provides expert technical guidance on the design and implementation of electrical and mechanical systems, including prototyping, fabrication, fixing, embedded systems development, sensors and data acquisition systems, circuit implementation, PCB design, soldering, and electro-mechanical integration. They support faculty with integrating hands-on learning experiences into engineering courses, and they provide technical consultations to students applying electronics and mechanical design principles to develop functional prototypes and projects.

The Engineering Projects Consultant leads the curriculum development and delivery of multiple hands-on skill-building workshops, including a series of workshops on Arduinos. This position also facilitates the development, maintenance, and continual improvement of laboratory capabilities to ensure tools, workflows, and instructional practices reflect current technologies and evidence-based pedagogies. Through direct mentorship and technical consultation, this role empowers students to successfully complete complex projects in hands-on engineering courses.

Responsibilities

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Technical Leadership – Electro-Mechanical Prototyping:

  • Delivers technical consultation and hands-on support to engineering students working with electro-mechanical systems—that may include Arduino-based microcontrollers, circuits, sensors and data acquisition systems, and printed circuit board (PCB) design—empowering them to successfully complete complex course-related projects.
  • Provides expert technical instruction and design evaluation for students using CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks, Onshape) and mechanical prototyping processes (e.g., 3D printing, laser cutting), guiding the development and refinement of functional, manufacturable design solutions.
  • Resolves electro-mechanical project challenges for students and faculty across design, fabrication, and system integration, including mechanical fit, manufacturability, electrical connectivity, and the integration of sensors and embedded components.
  • Evaluates and integrates emerging electro-mechanical technologies, embedded hardware platforms, and prototyping processes in collaboration with the ITLP engineering team, ensuring the laboratory's technical resources remain aligned with industry standards and the evolving priorities of the college.

Engineering Education Instruction – Hands-On Course Support

  • Develops and teaches skill-building workshops on topics such as Arduino, circuits, ECAD, CAD, and laser cutting, enabling students to build confidence with prototyping tools and engineering design practices.
  • Supports the ITLP Engineering Education Operations team with the preparation, implementation, and integration of hands-on curriculum aligned with ITLP courses and student project needs.
  • Consults and partners with CEAS faculty and ITLP Engineering Managers to co-design and implement innovative hands-on learning solutions that support new course development, increased enrollment, and the evolving instructional needs of the college.
  • Provides technical mentorship and pedagogical training to undergraduate engineering student employees, equipping them to successfully facilitate skill-building workshops and deliver high-quality technical assistance.

Laboratory Management

  • Independently fixes, maintains, and optimizes the use of electronics and prototyping equipment (e.g., soldering stations, oscilloscopes, 3D printers, laser cutters), and authors the associated documentation and user guides to ensure safe and reliable operation.
  • Enforces laboratory compliance with university Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) standards and programmatic safety protocols.
  • Administers the laboratory’s inventory of electronic and DAQ kits and components, managing the checkout and return of course-related equipment and tools, alongside the strategic tracking, organization, and replenishment of consumables and safety materials.

Other Duties

  • Undertakes other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Participates in professional development activities and serves on unit, college, or campus committees as applicable.

What You Should Know

Work hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm. This position is expected to work primarily in-person, with <20% remote work.

The salary for this position is $70,000. Relocation is available for eligible candidates.

What We Require

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field of study.
  • One year of experience in a hands-on engineering role or an educational environment with a focus on electro-mechanical systems.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.

What You Will Need

  • Proficiency in electro-mechanical prototyping tools and practices, including sensors, data acquisition systems, automation components, microcontrollers, circuit integration, and electronics repair.
  • Experience using EDA/ECAD software to create schematics, printed circuit board layouts, and supporting design documentation for electronics projects.
  • Experience using CAD software such as SolidWorks, Onshape, or a comparable platform to support mechanical design and integration of electronic and mechanical systems.
  • Experience developing data acquisition systems (using LabVIEW or Python a plus) and selecting sensors for specific applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver technical instruction, including hands-on workshops, student staff training programs, and one-on-one mentorship.
  • Working knowledge of soldering, rework, and inspection practices aligned with industry workmanship standards for high-reliability electronic assemblies.
  • Advanced problem-solving skills with the ability to independently resolve complex electro-mechanical challenges, including issues related to wiring, power, connectivity, component integration, PCB implementation, and mechanical fit.
  • Excellent organizational and collaboration skills, with the ability to partner effectively with staff and faculty to support a high volume of student needs across hands-on coursework.
  • Sensitivity to and appreciation of cultural, political, and geographical differences, with the ability to work well with faculty, staff, and students from around the world.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • Two or more years of applicable experience in a hands-on engineering role or an educational environment.
  • Arduino Certification or equivalent demonstrated experience developing and fixing embedded systems.
  • Experience with Altium Designer or other electronic computer-aided design tools.
  • Certified SolidWorks Associate (CSWA) or equivalent certification.
  • Experience with data acquisition systems that use LabVIEW or Python.
  • IPC workmanship certification (e.g., IPC J-STD-001 or IPC-A-610) or strong familiarity with industry standards for soldered electrical and electronic assemblies.
  • Experience delivering technical instruction, developing hands-on workshops, or mentoring undergraduate engineering students.
