Job Summary:

The Facilities and Operations Manager is responsible for the planning, coordination, maintenance, and oversight of Laboratory Animal Resource Center (LARC) facilities, equipment, and operational infrastructure across multiple campus locations. This position ensures the reliability, safety, compliance, and functionality of specialized animal research facilities, including animal housing environments, mechanical systems, sanitation processes, and capital equipment. The incumbent serves as a key liaison between LARC leadership, campus facilities departments, contractors, architects, engineers, researchers, and regulatory stakeholders to support a high-quality research environment.

The position oversees facility operations spanning 14 campus locations with approximately 182,673 square feet of research and animal care space and manages maintenance activities associated with more than $27 million in capital equipment assets.

Department Overview

The Laboratory Animal Resource Center (LARC) is a recharge department providing veterinary care and housing services for all animals used in biomedical research and teaching. LARC provides veterinary medical care and husbandry services, assures compliance with laws and regulations concerning the use of animals in research, and veterinary medical advice to UCSF researchers.

Qualifications Required Qualifications: - Two years college in Liberal Arts study or equivalenet education and experience in facility operations - 9 years of directly related experience in facility operations - Knowledge of Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S), USDA, AAALAC, NIH, FDA-GLP, state, local, and UCSF requirement sin housing and care of animals in teaching and biomedical research to ensure the highest standard for animal welfare - Advanced knowledge related to vivarium space planning; including building space planning, codes, capacity, security, fire safety, organization and departmental principles and procedures in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences. - Skilled in all aspects of animal care, large and small, and an excellent working knowledge of all LARC areas and the times needed to complete the tasks in those areas. - Experience with nonhuman primates. - Knowledge of latest equipment, automaton techniques, computerization systems used in animal husbandry operations. - Knowledge of animal behavior, restraint and handling to ensure animals and those working with them are not injured - Highly developed interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated ability and skills in working collaboratively and influencing others - Advanced and effective skills to multi-task and prioritize projects effectively - Flexibility to rotate as needed to all vivarium and other job-related functions and to work with different supervisors - Computer and database competency - Valid California Driver’s license (or within 30 days for out of state incumbents) and participation in the Department of Transportation Pull-Notice System - Valid California Driver’s License Certifications: - Valid California Driver’s License Preferred Qualifications: - AALA LATG certification - Certified Manager of Animal Resources (CMAR) About UCSF The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is a leading university dedicated to promoting health worldwide through advanced biomedical research, graduate-level education in the life sciences and health professions, and excellence in patient care.
