Position overview Position title: John R. Lewis College: Elective Courses Pre-six Lecturer
Salary range: A reasonable estimate for an appointment to teach the standard five-credit course is $8,872 - $15,104 (based on salary points 1-19). Please see the UCSC Salary Scales and refer to the Non-senate Instructional (NSI) Unit 18 Pre-six Lecturer Academic Year scale. Instructional Workload Credit (IWC) valuation may vary and the course salary will be adjusted accordingly. Compensation for Summer Session courses may vary from courses taught during the academic year (see Summer Session Faculty and Lecturer Pay).
Percent time: Variable, based on the course load assigned.
Anticipated start: Appointments are contingent on the hiring unit's instructional need and the availability of funding. This recruitment is valid for initial appointments made in spring quarter 2026 through spring quarter 2027. Initial appointments with effective dates outside of this recruitment period will require an alternative open recruitment.
Position duration: Appointments are typically made during one or more quarters of the regular academic year (fall, winter, and spring quarters), but they may also be made during Summer Session.

Position description

John R. Lewis College at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an ongoing pool of lecturers who may be appointed to teach John R. Lewis enhancement courses under the general direction of the college provost. A complete list of the John R. Lewis courses and their descriptions can be viewed in the UCSC Catalog. These courses offer students the opportunity for small, seminar-style classes at the college level and they are designed to augment or enhance general education requirements and disciplinary courses. The enhancement courses focus on the college's theme of Social Justice and Community. Selected candidates will contribute to this theme and in some cases, they will have the opportunity to design or help develop new enhancement courses. Although trained in one discipline, applicants should be comfortable working in an interdisciplinary environment and draw from expertise in one or more of the following disciplinary subject areas: humanities, arts, social sciences, or life sciences.

Applicants with any of the following qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply:

  • Record of effectively working with students from a wide range of social, cultural, and academic backgrounds.
  • Familiarity with current theory and research in social justice and community.
  • Master's degree or completion of at least one year of a Ph.D. program.
  • A minimum of two years' teaching experience at the university level.

The campus is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the inclusive excellence of the academic community through their teaching and other assigned duties.

B.A./B.S. degree or higher. Equivalent foreign degrees are applicable.
