Hiring Range

The University of California, Merced is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The salary range the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $86,400 - $104,000.

About The Job

The Director of Auxiliary Custodial Services oversees the staff and administrative processes responsible for maintaining clean and sanitary living, dining, and working environments for students and employees occupying Auxiliary-managed spaces. The Auxiliary Custodial Services department operates year-round serving all campus housing, dining, retail, and auxiliary event spaces. As supported by the Custodial Supervisor team and a centralized administration team, the Director of Auxiliary Custodial Services works to provide strategic, effective, and person-centered leadership to a diverse group of represented and non-represented staff working a wide range of shifts. This position also oversees grounds maintenance service in auxiliary-managed areas. Hires, trains, promotes, evaluates and discipline custodial employees. Responsible for ordering, issuing and storing of custodial equipment and supplies. Follows established infection-control practices to ensure a clean and safe environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Process and Policy Administration: Interpret, develop, and educate staff on custodial policies and procedures. Structure and align documented SOPs with collective bargaining agreement stipulations, campus policies, and best practices. Partner with Employee and Labor Relations to maintain good-faith implementation of department practices while working to improve and support a positive working environment for staff continuously. Define and regularly audit workload and work quality standards. Maintain an inventory and equipment management program and guide staff on appropriate use and care of equipment, maintenance and replacement protocols. Engage in large-scale ordering, contracting, and procurement procedures for equipment, uniforms, and other critical purchases. Develop, approve, and promote centralized processes, including shift bids, overtime requests, and special project assignments. Develops work standards and assignments for custodial operations; tests cleaning materials, equipment and building supplies with a focus on environmentally friendly cleaning and sustainability.
  • Supervision and Staff Development: Coach, supervise, and develop direct report staff. Consult and advise direct reports on effective supervision and staff management practices. Provide regular feedback, coaching, and support to direct and indirect staff and administer annual performance appraisals. Serve as liaison with Environmental Health & Safety, Risk Management, Human Resources, and other critical offices in support of ensuring workplace safety. Implement training and development programs that target improving efficiency, safety, effectiveness, and professional development for staff. Maintain effective leadership and visible presence, host regular department-wide meetings, and support processes for staff to communicate questions, concerns, and recommendations. Train, supervise, audit and ensure compliance of custodial enforcing standards of cleanliness, sanitation and safety.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree; and
  • 5 years of related experience or 9 years of related experience in lieu of degree (required).Knowledge, Skills and
  • Demonstrated experience leading administrative programs and centralization of disparate processes.
  • Working knowledge of custodial and housekeeping services, including knowledge of codes and policies governing chemical use, hazards, and safety practices.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising direct and indirect reports.
  • Experience managing within a union environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including skills in communicating processes and policies to diverse audiences.
  • Skills in service orientation, active listening, critical thinking.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and sustain effective relationships with staff at various levels within a large organization.
  • Knowledge of higher education processes and procedures.
  • Proficient in MS Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Outlook).
  • Ability to work under pressure, prioritize deadlines, and juggle multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
  • Ability to understand perspectives and experiences of multiple cultural and social identities.
  • Ability to implement process improvement strategies and quality initiatives.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and implement effective solutions.
