What are the responsibilities and job description for the SRA 3 (Analytical Laboratory Manager) position at University of California, Davis?
Job Summary
This position will provide management and supervision for the department’s Laboratory Instrumentation Facility and for the daily laboratory instrumentation activities, assays, and procedures. This includes maintenance of the instrumentation in the labs, troubleshooting and solving instrument problems, and ensuring that lab safety protocols are instituted and followed as well as identification of critical needs for analytical method acquisitions that support Viticulture & Enology’s teaching and research priorities. The incumbent will be required to develop protocols for analyses that are done for critical winemaking analysis on samples for teaching, research, and for other departmental wines/grapes projects; to read and abstract articles of value in the prosecution of broad research and teaching problems; and to organize and work through techniques necessary to transfer/validate established methods to wine/grape matrices.

- Work some weekends, evenings, and early mornings as work requires.
- Occasional travel to the Oakville Experimental Vineyard or the Kearney Agricultural Center may be required to install, maintain, or repair departmental equipment.
- Occasional travel to conferences, training, or seminars. Valid CA driver’s license.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or related field and 5 years of experience in chemical analysis and research.
- Research experience analyzing complex samples and matrices (such as foods, beverages, environmental, agricultural, or biomedical analyses)
- Experience with analytical instrumentation, including mechanical, electrical, and computer skills to maintain and repair instrumentation, including, but not limited to: gas chromatography, capillary electrophoresis, liquid chromatography, spectrophotometry, , mass spectrometry, titration, gas analysis (IR), atomic absorption and emission spectroscopy, centrifugation, vacuum, and hydraulic systems.
- Experience managing a laboratory, including instructing, monitoring, and supervising individuals in lab techniques, lab analysis, and safety procedures; and experience preparing lab reports and SOPs.
- Experience to communicate effectively, both written and verbally, with a large, diverse population regarding technical and administrative aspects of the job.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience assisting with manuscripts for publications and other reports.
- Experience developing equipment grant proposals to obtain new equipment or update existing instruments.
- Skill to maintain and calibrate instrumentation for winemaking and must analysis, including pH meters, refractometers, balances, temperature measuring devices, and water purification systems.
