What are the responsibilities and job description for the Bacteriology Technician II (SRA 2 NEX) position at University of California, Davis?
This position has a work schedule of Monday-Friday; 9:00am-6:00pm) with two four-hour Saturday shifts per month; (Work schedule might be slightly different during the training period). Expected to work occasional overtime and provide additional weekend/holiday coverage as needed. Under general direction of the supervisor, perform a wide variety of diagnostic testing for the isolation of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, fungi and mycoplasmas. Independently perform diagnostic testing for clinical pathogens; perform regulatory procedures for high-consequence agents including Taylorella sp., Campylobacter, Trichomonas and Salmonella. Provide independent evaluation of clinical case work ups including analytical, biochemical & immunological techniques to identify infectious agents and/or their products. Communicate with veterinarians, clinicians, & clients regarding testing requirements for diagnostic bacteriology, mycology & parasitology testing. Organize and prioritize workload and monitor diagnostic testing by established QC procedures. Assist in evaluating new testing methods and equipment by performing comparative testing with established methods and literature searches of reference material. Perform equipment preventive maintenance. Maintain detailed records of quality control and case work performed. Perform test assignment and data entry in the Laboratory Information Management System. Train other personnel and direct student assistants in the performance of routine lab duties.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position
- BS degree in a scientific discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience, with experience performing and interpreting results of diagnostic bacteriology, mycology, and parasitology tests.
- Background in bacteriology, animal science and/or livestock/poultry production.
- Experience in a veterinary or human diagnostic bacteriology laboratory.
- Knowledge of and ability to perform independent evaluation of submission request forms and clinical case work-ups including analytical, biochemical, immunological, and mass spectrometry techniques to identify infectious agents in clinical and environment.
- Leadership skills to train and direct other technicians and student assistants in the performance of routine job duties.
- Skills to evaluate new technical procedures related to enhancing diagnostic accuracy; knowledge, judgment and ability to perform new test validation.

Department Overview
CAHFS provides California's livestock and poultry industries, and veterinary practitioners who serve them, with a full range of diagnostic laboratory services for disease control, enhancement of health management, and protection from diseases common to animal and humans. In meeting this need, the CAHFS also serves as the backbone of California's disease warning system through its animal disease surveillance program. The system consists of four laboratories currently located in Davis, Turlock, Tulare and San Bernardino. Funding for this program is provided through a contract with the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) and through revenue generated from user fees. An additional program, the Equine Analytical Chemistry Laboratory, is funded through a contract with the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) and horse wagering monies, and provides full-service drug testing and a pharmacology research and development program.

Work Environment
