The UAF SOE Alaska Indigenous Teacher Network (AITN) Faculty position collaborates with multiple UAF partners across the Fairbanks Troth Yeddha’ and rural campuses, external education organizations including tribal entities, and school districts in our Grow Your Own efforts. The position works with partners beginning with the identification of Alaska Indigenous Teacher Network students in high school and continuing through to UAF degree/license completion to identify and remove barriers to degree completion and teaching certification for Indigenous teacher education students.

Work with Elementary, Secondary, and Special Education faculty to develop and deliver robust distance delivery sections of courses that will meet requirements for the Elementary, Secondary, and Special Education degree programs. Facilitate incorporation of content and methods grounded in Indigenous education and rural education. Work with UAF SOE faculty and administration to research, develop, and deliver flexible course models to help with credit attainment for pre-service education students, including models such as 1-2 week course intensives.

Organize and facilitate cohort and network building activities for AITN students and alumni both on the UAF campus and through a hybrid virtual/face to face community building approach for students pursuing degrees via distance delivery.

In addition to teaching responsibilities, the position includes a service component that involves participation in departmental, school, and university committees; community and public service activities; and support for program accreditation processes. Work with Elementary, Secondary, and Special Education program faculty to ensure robust integration of Indigenous and local knowledge into education preparation programs. Work with UAF SOE faculty, administration and staff to support and expand district partnerships to promote recruitment into the education profession.

To thrive in this role, the successful candidate will be a student-centered educator who is team-oriented with strong interpersonal skills. They will demonstrate commitment to teaching undergraduate and graduate-level teacher prep courses at the university level. They will bring creativity and experience in educating pre-service teachers through in-person and digitally delivered coursework. They will have experience, in some combination, working with Indigenous populations, rural education and/or Alaska school districts. The ideal applicant will be able to work independently and collaboratively, make effective decisions under pressure, build and maintain strong relationships, and contribute positively to a diverse and collegial academic team.

A commitment to Alaska Native and rural communities, and the ability to advocate for the teaching profession and the university are key aspects of the position.
