We also prepare the next generation of educators and marine scientists through workforce development opportunities for college students. The Socioecology Research and Engagement Fellow will conduct mixed-methods research on place-based environmental education and socioecological systems by supporting the implementation and evaluation of educational and community science programs. Responsibilities include collecting and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data, assisting in the analysis of evaluation instruments, and preparing reports, peer-reviewed manuscripts, and presentations that communicate research findings to scientific and practitioner audiences.

Instruct marine science and coastal ecology for students grade PK-12 discussion, lab, field and outreach programs as well as summer camps and youth workshops to include content mastery, teaching preparation, program development, and evaluation

Support and assist in leading the GeoStewards Institute, an immersive summer research experience that equips high school student participants with GIS and spatial analysis skills to investigate local environmental issues. Through mentorship, field experiences, and geospatial storytelling, the institute integrates spatial learning with place-based education to strengthen environmental literacy, community engagement, and stewardship.

The UGA Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant seek a Socioecology Research and Engagement Fellow to work at the Marine Education Center and Aquarium on UGA’s Marine Science Campus on Skidaway Island near Savannah GA. The temporary, non-benefit-eligible, non-exempt position is offered to recent college graduates. This position serves as a bridge experience between college and a professional career and is designed for individuals who are interested in gaining applied research and coastal engagement experience. Applicants with graduate degrees or previous multiple internship experience are not eligible for this fellowship.
The Socioecology Research and Engagement Fellow is a one-year research fellowship position that supports an interdisciplinary research program examining how place-based education, environmental engagement, and community science foster environmental literacy, place identity, stewardship, and community resilience. Working closely with Dr. Vanessa van Heerden, the fellow will contribute to research integrating social sciences, environmental education, GIS, and community engagement.
Primarily, the fellow will participate in all phases of the research process, including study design, data collection, program evaluation, qualitative and quantitative analysis, scientific writing, and dissemination of findings. Secondly, the fellow will gain hands-on opportunities to lead place-based experiences teaching a wide variety of marine-related topics to grade PK-12 students in field, lab and discussion formats, public programs, summer marine science camps, school outreach, and community events. The position also includes opportunities to engage directly with educators, students, community partners, and natural resource professionals.
This fellowship is grant-funded and project specific. Some Saturday and evening work is needed. Dates of employment are from September 2026 to August 2027. Pay is administered on an hourly basis, 30-40 hours per week depending on scheduled programming. Unpaid holidays coincide with university, state, federal and other pre-determined dates. Onsite housing is provided and necessary for the position.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification In Position
- B.S. or B.A degree in a coastal related discipline (education, environmental science, marine science, or other natural, physical, or social sciences), from an accredited college or university, awarded within the last two years. Degree should be awarded before fellowship begins.
- Preferred completion of marine or environmental science courses (i.e., biology, marine biology, marine science, ecology, invertebrate zoology and ichthyology).
- Previous experience teaching or working with children or students.
- Previous experience conducting environmental or sociological research.
- Previous experience with conducting analysis in statistical software (R-Studio or SPSS).
- Previous experience working with ArcGIS software.
- Current CITI certification and experience with IRB approved research
- U.S. citizenship or U.S. work visa. Background checks are required for UGA employment.
- Fluency in English – bilingual applicants (English/Spanish) are encouraged to apply.
- Ability to work independently and to communicate well with others (verbally and in writing). Proficiency with MS Office, email and social media.
- Experience conducting social science or interdisciplinary environmental research.
- Knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies.
- Experience with survey design, data collection, and research ethics.
- Demonstrated scientific writing and communication skills.
- Experience using statistical software (R, SPSS, SAS, JMP, or similar).
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within interdisciplinary teams.

- Willingness to travel throughout Georgia for fieldwork and educational programming.
