Position: Phlebotomy / Point of Care Coordinator

POSITION SUMMARY: The Phlebotomy/Point of Care Coordinator is responsible for the coordination, oversight, and continuous improvement of phlebotomy services and point of care testing (POCT) throughout Northwest Texas Healthcare System. This role ensures the accuracy, reliability, and regulatory compliance of both pre analytical and analytical processes while also leading departmental initiatives that enhance patient safety, clinical quality, workflow efficiency, and overall patient and clinician experience.

In addition to daily operational responsibilities, the Coordinator plays a key role in identifying improvement opportunities, analyzing performance data, and implementing corrective actions or process enhancements. The position partners closely with nursing units, medical staff, phlebotomy leadership, and Technical Coordinators to support systemwide standardization, regulatory readiness, and the successful rollout of new technologies, equipment, or testing platforms. The Coordinator also leads or participates in projects focused on improving specimen quality, reducing errors, strengthening documentation, and elevating service delivery.

This position requires strong communication skills, a proactive approach to problemsolving, and the ability to guide staff through training, competency, and change initiatives. By combining operational expertise with a commitment to quality and safety, the Coordinator supports the department's mission to deliver reliable, patientcentered diagnostic services aligned with organizational goals.

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Oversight of daily operations of phlebotomy services, outpatient and offsite phlebotomy locations, and POCT programs.
  • Ensures compliance with CAP, CLIA'88, Joint Commission, and other regulatory standards.
  • Develops, maintains, and updates policies, procedures, and competency assessments for phlebotomy and POCT.
  • Coordinates training, competency, and ongoing education for POCT operators and phlebotomy staff.
  • Monitors quality indicators, investigates variances, and implements corrective actions to improve safety and performance.
  • Leads or participates in departmental and hospitalwide quality, safety, and performance improvement projects.
  • Supports preanalytical quality processes, including specimen integrity, labeling accuracy, and workflow optimization.
  • Collaborate with the Medical Director and Technical Coordinators regarding analytical issues, troubleshooting, and clinical concerns

Qualifications

Education, Training, Experience and Licenses/Registrations Required:

  • Minimum Education: Associate's degree with a major in medical laboratory technology, microbiology, biology, chemistry, or related science. Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Minimum Work Experience: At least five (5) years of clinical laboratory experience, preferably in phlebotomy services
  • Certification: Certified or certification eligible with American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), National Phlebotomy Association, or other recognized certification agency
  • Must meet the personnel requirements as outlined by CLIA '88
  • Mathematical, computer, reasoning, and language skills at the undergraduate or graduate level
