Job Summary
The Blower Repair Technician at Universal Blower Pac (UBP) is responsible for the diagnostic analysis, repair, and preventive maintenance of blowers and related equipment, primarily in a workshop setting but occasionally at customer locations.
This role also serves as a backup to the Field Service Technician, providing onsite support for installation, start-up, maintenance, troubleshooting, and customer assistance as needed.
Essential Functions
- Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues using diagnostic tools and service manuals.
- Disassemble, clean, repair, and rebuild blower units to original factory specifications using genuine OEM parts.
- Perform preventive maintenance, including lubrication, filter replacement, and general system upkeep.
- Maintain accurate documentation, including service reports, repair logs, parts lists, and warranty paperwork.
- Process warranty claims with blower manufacturers when applicable.
- Collaborate with Sales and Management to schedule and prioritize repairs, provide repair quotations, and communicate status updates to ensure timely service and customer satisfaction.
- Complete blower repairs within established turnaround goals once customer purchase orders or parts are received.
- Suggest and implement improvements for service processes, efficiency, and customer satisfaction.
- Establish and maintain documentation for blowers in long-term storage programs.
- Train customers or internal team members on the proper operation and maintenance of blower systems.
- Communicate with Sales, Management, and Procurement to monitor repair progress and inventory status, maintain appropriate part and tool levels, and support strategic inventory planning for timely repairs.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area; regularly inspect and properly maintain tools and PPE, reporting any unsafe conditions to management.
- Provide occasional assistance to the Production Department when repair workload allows, such as helping with unit assembly, packaging, material movement, or general shop housekeeping under the direction of Production Management.
Field Service Functions
- Provide onsite support for equipment installation, start-up, inspection, maintenance, and repair as needed.
- Assist with or independently perform field troubleshooting and diagnostics at customer locations.
- Conduct basic customer training on equipment operation and maintenance.
- Prepare complete, accurate, and timely field service reports and documentation.
- Provide technical support via phone or computer when required.
- Support emergency service calls or provide coverage during Field Service Technician absences.
- Follow all company and customer safety policies and procedures while in the field.
Skills and Competencies
- Technical Expertise: Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude with proven hands-on experience in industrial maintenance or equipment repair.
- Problem Solving: Ability to identify, analyze, and resolve complex issues effectively and efficiently.
- Blueprint and Manual Reading: Proficiency in interpreting technical manuals, schematics, and assembly drawings.
- Physical Ability: Capable of performing manual labor, using power tools, and handling heavy components safely.
- Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills for collaboration, documentation, and customer interaction.
- Organization: Effective time management and ability to balance multiple priorities.
- Adaptability and Independence: ability to transition between shop-based work and field work when necessary and to work independently in both environments.
Education and Reasoning Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Factory training or certification as a Gardner Denver authorized technician preferred.
- Previous experience as a blower, compressor, or HVAC technician strongly desired.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 75 lbs. and stand for extended periods.
- Regular standing, bending, and manual dexterity required.
- Must be able to lift, push, or pull materials and equipment as needed.
Work Environment
- Work performed primarily in a manufacturing and repair environment.
- Moderate noise levels with occasional exposure to oil, grease, and industrial materials.
- Field work performed at customer sites under varying conditions.
- Personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn in accordance with company safety policy.
