Industrial Fire & EMS Specialist — Steelworks

Step into a pivotal role at U. S. Steel’s Granite City Works in Granite City, IL, where your decisions keep people and property safe in a heavy industrial setting. On any given shift, you may roll out to a call for service, stabilize a medical emergency as an EMT, operate fire apparatus, or evaluate hazards—always following established departmental procedures across multiple areas of the plant.

What you’ll do

• Respond to in-plant calls for service and emergency incidents using department-adopted procedures.
• Operate fire apparatus and associated equipment as needed; support hazardous materials response.
• Inspect, test, and maintain portable extinguishers and fixed fire protection systems.
• Serve in a security capacity when assigned, operating a department-issued response vehicle.
• Conduct fact-finding after incidents and document details in clear, thorough reports.
• Maintain all certifications required to protect employees and company assets (EMS, firefighting, HazMat).
  
  

Schedule & work environment

• Rotating 12-hour shifts, including some Saturdays and Sundays.
• Heavy industrial conditions: hot, cold, dirty, greasy, wet, and noisy.
• Work spans various areas throughout the Granite City Works facility.
  
  

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED, and a valid driver’s license.
• State or National Licensed basic EMT.
• Certified Firefighter I or equivalent.
• Ability to perform under pressure in stressful emergency situations.
• Strong investigative and report-writing skills.

• Level 1 - $2,281.87
• Level 2 - $2,498.35
• Level 3 - $2,747.18
  
  

This base salary range is a good faith estimate. Depending on candidate skills and experience, the final offer may be lower or higher.
