Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Complete DNR Septage Servicing Operator Certification and maintain the license through continuing education.
  • Maintain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and an acceptable driving record in accordance with company policy.
  • Drive and operate a heavy-duty truck safely in a variety of road, weather, and site conditions.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and report any issues to supervisors or maintenance promptly.
  • Operate vacuum pressure pumps and other specialized equipment as required to service customer sites.
  • Pump out and clean septic systems, grease traps, and holding tanks, and complete county maintenance reports for each service.
  • Complete confined space entry training, enter confined spaces, and clean lines as needed.
  • Dispose of waste at approved storage facilities and public treatment plants in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Maintain legible, accurate daily service logs in accordance with WI DNR regulations.
  • Refuel the truck at the end of each workday.
  • Adhere to safety protocols for heavy equipment operation, including awareness of surroundings and road hazards.
  • Provide courteous, professional service to customers and work effectively with co-workers and field/transportation managers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Considerable knowledge of heavy-equipment operation.
  • Experience working with DOT rules and regulations.
  • Proficiency operating heavy trucks over-the-road (long-haul or short-haul), or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to operate small hand tools and understand written and verbal instructions in English.
  • Basic math skills and effective communication abilities.
  • CDL operator's license with tanker endorsement and Federal Medical Card endorsement.
  • Acceptable driving record per FMCSA DOT regulations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in septic, grease trap, or liquid waste servicing.
  • Previous experience in the waste management, recycling, or wastewater treatment industry.
  • HAZWOPER or confined space entry certification prior to hire.
  • Experience completing DNR or other regulatory service and maintenance reports.
  • Strong customer service skills, with experience working directly at customer sites.

Physical and Mental Demands:

  • Ability to sit for extended periods while driving, and to stand, walk, bend, and kneel while servicing tanks and equipment on-site.
  • Ability to lift, connect, and maneuver hoses and vacuum equipment, including repetitive lifting of equipment and components.
  • Ability to enter and work within confined spaces as required by the role.
  • Ability to maintain focus and situational awareness while driving, operating equipment, and working around moving vehicles and machinery.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and accurately complete written service logs and regulatory reports.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment when responding to changing road, weather, and site conditions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with customers, co-workers, and supervisors.

Working Environment:

  • Work is performed on company premises, public highways, and a variety of customer sites, with exposure to all weather conditions.
  • Regular exposure to septage, liquid waste, unpleasant odors, and confined spaces.
  • Exposure to road hazards and traffic while operating a heavy-duty truck on public highways and at customer locations.
  • Works around moving equipment and vacuum machinery, and must remain aware of surroundings at all times.
  • Travel between customer sites, storage facilities, and public treatment plants is a regular part of the role.
