The Maintenance Service Technician is responsible for diagnosing and repairing diesel equipment, performing preventative maintenance, and maintaining all equipment in top operating condition in accordance with DOT compliance and regulations. This role is a hands-on position within the maintenance shop, requiring strong diagnostic and repair skills across a wide range of tractors, trailers, and related equipment, as well as the ability to work independently, communicate effectively, and help drive continuous improvement in shop processes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Diagnose and repair all tractor/trailer mechanical problems, including but not limited to: brake work including seals and drums, lighting, suspension systems, electrical/electronic systems, diesel fuel systems, engine repair, oil changes, tire repair and replacement, body work, and hydraulics.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on equipment, including tractors, trailers, and other shop equipment.
  • Perform general welding duties as needed to support repair and fabrication work.
  • Perform all major trailer repairs.
  • Complete work orders accurately and promptly when maintenance has been completed.
  • Provide guidance to the Shop Supervisor on parts and inventory needs to maintain appropriate stock levels.
  • Keep the maintenance shop clean, organized, and safe at all times.
  • Put away unused equipment, tools, and materials in their appropriate location after use.
  • Develop new approaches, recommend improvements, and implement measures to improve work order process flow, equipment performance, and follow-through from work order creation through completion and billing.
  • Continually look for ways to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of shop operations.
  • Perform other related duties as required and assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Essential Skills & Experience:

  • Two-year associate degree in a Diesel Mechanic/Technician program, or equivalent experience demonstrating knowledge of the principles and practices of maintenance operations normally obtained through formal training and education.
  • Welding experience.
  • High energy level and the drive to follow through on work assignments.
  • Ability to act independently and manage time effectively with minimal supervision.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including basic math calculations and formulas.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to read work orders and communicate effectively with employees at all levels of the company.
  • Commitment to company values.
  • Proficient in the use of a personal computer, including Microsoft Office software.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous work experience in a shop environment.
  • Experience working with DOT rules and regulations.
  • Working knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures and schedules for heavy equipment.
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish).
  • Familiarity working on and repairing/maintaining a variety of equipment, including but not limited to: tractor/trailers, drag hose equipment, injectors, sweeps, gators, front end loaders, forklifts, skid loaders, balzers, power units, shredders, balers, conveyor belts, side spreader trucks, plastics chippers, power washers, and waste-processing equipment such as blowers, mixers, centrifuges, DAF units, scales, and harvesters.

Physical and Mental Demands:

  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, squat, lay on the ground, crouch, climb steps, and use hands to operate power tools and equipment, including a personal computer.
  • Ability to lift objects from floor to overhead weighing up to 50 lbs. frequently and up to 75 lbs. infrequently.
  • Ability to read printed material of varying font sizes, including correspondence, blueprints, specifications, and personal computer screens.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with employees and vendors in person, via telephone, and/or via email.
  • Ability to maintain focus and awareness of surroundings at all times while working around moving equipment.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and problem-solving skills when diagnosing mechanical issues under time and operational pressure.
  • Ability to manage physically demanding, repetitive tasks while maintaining attention to detail and safety.

Working Environment:

  • Regular exposure to weather elements, including heat, cold, snow, rain, and sleet.
  • Exposure to unpleasant odors, grease, dirt, grime, wet floors, and noise when working and walking through shop areas.
  • Works around moving equipment and machinery, including semi-trailers, tractors, and recycling equipment, and must remain aware of surroundings at all times.
  • Exposure to road hazards and traffic when moving equipment, machinery, and vehicles between buildings, within buildings, and around the premises.
  • Requires commuting between the shop, office location, and farming operations as needed.
  • First-shift schedule, Monday through Friday, with overtime as needed.
