The United Fund for the Arts and Humanities (UFAH) brings people together to strengthen the arts and humanities through collaborative fundraising.
Each year, UFAH works with donors, businesses, foundations, volunteers, and partner organizations to support programs that inspire creativity, preserve history, expand arts education, and enrich community life throughout the greater La Crosse area.
As Executive Director, you will help lead this work by strengthening community relationships, coordinating fundraising efforts, supporting good governance, and ensuring the organization operates with professionalism, accountability, and excellence.
Position Summary
The Executive Director serves as UFAH's primary staff leader and works closely with the Board of Directors to advance the organization's mission and strategic priorities.
This is a hands-on leadership position within a one-staff organization. The Executive Director provides organizational leadership while coordinating fundraising activities, supporting Board governance, managing day-to-day operations, maintaining administrative systems, and building productive relationships throughout the community.
Supported by an engaged Board of Directors, active committees, and dedicated volunteers, the Executive Director plays a central role in ensuring UFAH remains organized, responsive, and sustainable.
Primary Responsibilities
The Executive Director is responsible for:
- Coordinating UFAH's Annual Fund and donor stewardship activities.
- Managing day-to-day organizational operations and office administration.
- Supporting the Board of Directors and its committees through meeting coordination, governance support, and implementation of Board-approved policies.
- Maintaining accurate donor, financial, and organizational records.
- Coordinating communications, website content, and office technology systems.
- Building collaborative relationships with Member organizations, donors, volunteers, sponsors, and community partners.
- Representing UFAH throughout the community at meetings, fundraising activities, and public events.
- Continuously improving organizational systems, processes, and operational effectiveness.
Preferred Qualifications
Successful candidates will typically possess:
- A bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience in nonprofit administration, fundraising, communications, business administration, arts administration, or a related field.
- Three or more years of progressively responsible experience in nonprofit leadership, administration, fundraising, communications, or organizational operations.
- Excellent written, verbal, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Experience working collaboratively with nonprofit boards, volunteers, and community partners.
- Strong organizational and project management skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Experience using donor databases, Microsoft Office, website content management systems, and digital communication platforms.
- The ability to balance strategic leadership with hands-on operational responsibilities in a small nonprofit environment.
Work Schedule
This is a salaried exempt position averaging approximately 24 hours per week with a flexible work schedule.
Most work occurs during normal weekday business hours. Occasional evening and weekend meetings, fundraising activities, and community events are expected. Limited remote work may be available based on organizational needs and Board expectations.
