APTA Orthopedics is an academy of the American Physical Therapy Association dedicated to advancing orthopedic physical therapy through education, research, and professional development. The role

The Executive Director serves as the chief executive of APTA Orthopedics, responsible for strategic leadership, organizational management, and advancing the academy's mission. Reporting directly to the President and Board of Directors, the ED oversees all programs, operations, and staff while cultivating strong relationships with members, volunteers, APTA leadership, and external partners.

Key responsibilities

Leadership & strategic direction

● Implement the strategic plan in collaboration with the Board of Directors

● Provide visionary leadership to advance APTA Orthopedics' national reputation

● Advise the Board on governance, policy development, and long-range planning

● Identify emerging trends, opportunities, and risks affecting the profession

Organizational & operational management

● Oversee all administrative, financial, and operational functions

● Recruit, mentor, and supervise staff and contractors

● Foster a positive, inclusive, and collaborative workplace culture

● Oversee facility operations including tenant leases and building maintenance

● Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and APTA policies

Financial leadership & resource development

● Develop and oversee the annual operating budget with the Finance Committee

● Monitor financial performance, cash flow, and investments

● Pursue non-dues revenue opportunities including sponsorships and grants

● Build and maintain relationships with donors, sponsors, and institutional partners

Member engagement & communications

● Advance the value of membership through meaningful engagement and resources

● Oversee communications, publications, marketing, and digital platforms

● Strengthen the organization's brand and public presence

Advocacy & external relations

● Represent APTA Orthopedics within APTA and with professional societies and academic institutions

● Develop strategic partnerships that enhance the organization's mission and influence

● Advocate for policies that support the advancement of orthopedic physical therapy

Qualifications

Education

● Bachelor's degree required

● Master's or doctorate preferred in management, nonprofit leadership, physical therapy, or healthcare administration

Experience

● 7 years of progressive leadership in nonprofit, association, or healthcare management

● Professional membership association experience strongly preferred

● Demonstrated success in strategic planning and financial management
