About the Role:

The Pediatric Dental Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting pediatric dentists by providing exceptional care and comfort to young patients during dental procedures.  This position involves preparing treatment rooms, coronal polishing and applying sealants, assisting during dental treatments, and ensuring all instruments and materials are sterilized and ready for use.  The assistant will also be responsible for educating children and their parents on proper oral hygiene practices tailored to pediatric needs.  A key outcome of this role is to create a positive, reassuring environment that reduces anxiety and fosters a lifelong commitment to dental health.  Ultimately, the Pediatric Dental Assistant contributes to the smooth operation of the dental practice while prioritizing the safety and well-being of every child.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of an accredited dental assistant training program.
  • Certification in CPR and First Aid.
  • Knowledge of dental terminology and pediatric dental procedures.
  • Ability to pass a background check and comply with state dental assistant licensing requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working specifically in a pediatric dental setting.
  • Certification as a Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with dental practice management software.
  • Strong communication skills tailored to interacting with children and their families.
  • Radiology Certification, Coronal Polishing and Sealant Certification, Expanded Function Dental Assistant (EFDA).

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and organize dental instruments, materials, and equipment prior to patient appointments.
  • Assist the pediatric dentist during examinations and treatments by handing instruments and managing suction devices.
  • Perform coronal polishing and/or apply sealants.
  • Taking radiographs and panoramic X-rays.
  • Ensure strict adherence to infection control protocols, including instrument sterilization and treatment area disinfection.
  • Provide comfort and reassurance to young patients to help alleviate fear and anxiety during dental visits.
  • Educate patients and their caregivers on oral hygiene techniques and post-treatment care instructions.
  • Maintain accurate patient records and document treatment details as directed by the dentist.
  • Manage appointment scheduling and assist with administrative tasks as needed to support office efficiency.

The Pediatric Dental Assistant utilizes strong organizational skills daily to prepare treatment rooms and manage dental instruments efficiently, ensuring seamless dental procedures.  Effective communication skills are essential for explaining procedures and oral care instructions to children and their parents in a clear, compassionate manner.  Attention to detail is critical when following infection control protocols and accurately documenting patient information.  The assistant’s ability to remain calm and patient helps create a comforting environment that reduces children’s anxiety during visits.  Additionally, proficiency with dental software and administrative tasks supports the smooth operation of the dental office and enhances patient care coordination.
