The EHS Manager will have extensive knowledge of and provide the development and implementation of programs and systems to comply with federal, state and local EHS regulations and company policies. Responsible for monitoring workplace safety risks and environmental impacts through the analysis of work processes, materials equipment and work habits of employees. Identify potential and actual areas of non-compliance through audits and inspections. Ensure appropriate corrective action is taken to address safety issues. Develop and implement EHS training programs.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Maintain environmental compliance including all air and water permit reporting requirements.
  • Maintain Environmental Management System.
  • Implement and document training program for employees to ensure competence and compliance with all safety and environmental programs.
  • Coordinate with safety committee activities through meetings, training and activities ensuring participation from all work shifts and management.
  • Oversee facility internal hazard identification, auditing and corrective action activities and improve existing protocol to ensure action on employee EHS concerns and questions.
  • Manage accident and near miss investigation program, maintain OSHA recordkeeping, track near misses and lost time accidents to determine injury trends.
  • Maintain training programs in First Aid, CPR, Hazard Communication, Emergency Response, PPE and establish new programs where indicated.
  • Maintain logs of daily gas usages, water discharge and wet cake inventories.
  • Manage contractor EHS program to ensure that all contractors performing work on site understand and follow established facility EHS requirements that routine OSHA safety procedures are followed.
  • Coordinate permitting activities between all federal, state and local regulatory agencies and facility management.
  • Conduct job safety analysis on all essential job functions performed within the facility and understand their environmental impacts, safety and health requirements. This is to include behavior-based audits.
  • Maintain and train employees in lock-out, tag-out, confined space entry, electrical safety including arc flash safety, forklift, and other machinery safety, hot work permitting, fire prevention and establish and effectively implement new programs where needed. Create training matrices to ensure that all training is defined and tracked to completion.
  • Coordinate activities with local response authorities such as the police, EMT and the fire department.
  • Drive the improvement of existing environmental health and safety programs and lead compliance with company EHS policies and procedures.
  • Lead compliance with all applicable federal, state and local regulations and permits, ensuring standards are met through accountability, participation, auditing and developing and maintaining effective systems.
  • Manage inventory of safety supplies and equipment.
  • Coordinate environmental consultant activities in the preparation and modification of environmental permit applications, permit renewals an all quarterly/annual compliance reports and certifications.
  • Host audits by regulators, negotiate with regulatory agencies as necessary.
  • Facilitate risk assessment to identify potential EHS hazards.
  • Maintain record keeping and compliance with all applicable regulations from the EPA, DOT, DHS, FDA, DNR, OSHA, and DATCP.
  • Ensure compliance with PSM and RMP regulations for our ethanol operations.
  • Work with auditors from safety or insurance companies for compliance.
  • Maintain comprehensive bin entry program/policies and complete grain training on bin entry.
  • Maintain FRA required logs and ensure operational compliance with these regulations.
  • Train staff to HAZMAT and HAZWOPER.
  • Maintain and carry out industrial hygiene records and PPE assessments.
  • Be the safety coach for the facility, leading by example, teaching good habits and ethical practices.
  • Work with Cintas for supplying the first aid cabinets.
Qualifications:

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 or more years of experience in EHS, preferably in a manufacturing environment.
  •  Associate/Certified Safety Professional (ASP/CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or other EHS related certification preferred.
  • Experience working in a LEAN or continual improvement environment and ability to apply continual improvement concepts to EHS excellence.
  •  Experience in leading/handling compliance issues, permitting, manufacturing operations, OSHA/EPA programs, regulatory reviews, permit preparation, reporting and record keeping.

 

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:

  • Working environment is generally favorable. Lighting, temperature, and noise levels are adequate with occasional exposure to cold temperatures.
  • Regular entry into the production facility always requires personal protective equipment to be worn. This includes a hard hat, Fire rated clothing, safety glasses, and steel toed boots.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk, hear, use hands to finger, handle or touch objects, keyboard and occasionally lift up to 75 lbs.
  • Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch. Specific vision abilities required by this job include vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
