Position Purpose
The Sexton plays a vital role in maintaining UUCDC’s facilities to ensure our Unitarian Universalist community has a welcoming home. The Sexton is responsible for making sure the church is maintained and clean and for setting up for special events. The position therefore requires strong maintenance skills. Core Competencies
The person in this position must be able to support the mission and values of UUCDC and take pride in maintaining a clean and welcoming facility. As a key staff person in a mid-sized church with limited staffing resources, the existing staff is often called upon to fulfill multiple roles within their job duties. Therefore, the Sexton must possess the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously and to work well under pressure of deadlines.
Essential Functions
- Hours: 8 - 10 / week
- Communicate with the Church Administrator regarding any issues that arise that might need to be brought to the attention of the Building and Property Committee.
- Ensure all parts of the church are tidy and clean, including restrooms, sheds, and crawlspaces.
- Make small repairs, including fixing furniture, drywall patching, and simple electrical and plumbing work.
Qualifications
- Alignment with and commitment to the mission, vision, and values of UUCDC.
- Build positive relationships and interact professionally and effectively with colleagues, congregants, and others to ensure a positive and professional image of the church.
- At least one year of related janitorial or custodial experience strongly preferred.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds and climb stairs and ladders as required.
- Ability to move tables and chairs, set up for events, and occasionally move office furniture and to use cleaning and maintenance materials and equipment safely.
- Ability to work cooperatively as a member of a team and independently; and under pressure.
- Basic computer skills needed to read, comprehend and respond to written instructions, schedules, notifications and emails.
- High level of attention to detail.
- Ability to work with a variable work schedule, depending on the season and events on UUCDC’s calendar.
- Criminal background clearance required post offer.
- Maintain lighting, alarm systems, clocks, and HVAC systems.
- Prepare set-ups for weekly services and special events, including setting up tables and chairs.
- Communicate with staff responsible for ordering supplies to ensure the facility is stocked with cleaning supplies, toilet tissue, and paper towels.
