What are the responsibilities and job description for the Social Content Creator | Freelance position at Understory?
Understory is a new creative shop built for today’s brands. We’re in our infancy - one prominent client secured ahead of launch and more coming soon. This is a true ground-floor opportunity - a chance to help shape an agency designed to move fast, think clearly, and create work that lives in culture.
We’re looking for a freelance, part-time Social Content Creator who understands platforms natively and can take ideas from concept → shoot → edit with speed and intention. You don’t need a ton of agency or brand experience - just a proven ability to make social content that people actually watch.
What You’ll Do
- Concept, shoot, and edit short-form social content (TikTok, Reels)
- Create work that feels native - lo-fi to lightly polished, never “ad-agency commercial”
- Spot trends early and adapt them for brands in ways that feel authentic
- Concept and iterate quickly, prioritizing momentum over perfection
- Understand basic lighting framing to make things look good without overproducing
- Collaborate with agency and brand parters on content development
Bonus: Food / restaurant content experience is great, but not required.
You'd Thrive in this role if you value...
- IMPACT over AWARDS — You care about what content does, not how it looks in a deck.
- CULTURE over COMMERCIALS — You create work for people, not outdated media formats.
- COURAGE over CONVENTION — You experiment and push formats.
- PROGRESS over PARALYSIS — You move fast, stay positive, and work towards solutions.
- BRAINS over BLOAT — You thrive in small, sharp, empowered teams.
What You Bring
- A portfolio of social content that has performed (personal accounts count)
- Ability to self-shoot and edit efficiently (CapCut, Premiere, etc.)
- Strong understanding of sound, pacing, platform behavior, and cultural nuance
- A creative POV that comes through in your work
- Comfort taking loose ideas and turning them into content quickly
Compensation
$50–75/hr, depending on experience and scope.
Freelance. Part-time. Flexible. Repeat opportunities as we grow. If you're currently looking for a full 9-5, this isn't for you. If you don't like operating with a bit of ambiguity, this likely isn't a great fit.
