Director of Operations (Finance & Business Operations)

Underground Specialists is seeking an experienced Director of Operations to join our executive leadership team. This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for overseeing the daily operations of our growing underground utility and directional drilling company while providing strong financial oversight and strategic business leadership.

This individual will work closely with ownership to improve efficiency, strengthen accountability, and help guide the company's continued growth.

Position Summary
As the Director of Operations, you will oversee the company's daily business operations while ensuring the financial health and operational performance of the organization. You will partner closely with ownership to implement scalable systems, improve efficiencies, establish accountability, and develop processes that support sustainable growth.
This position requires a strategic leader who is equally comfortable reviewing financial statements, improving office procedures, collaborating with field leadership, and making operational decisions that positively impact the business.
Primary Responsibilities
Operational Leadership
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the company to ensure efficiency, productivity, and accountability.
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve company policies, procedures, and standard operating processes.
- Work closely with field supervisors, project managers, and office staff to improve communication and operational performance.
- Identify operational challenges and implement practical solutions that improve workflow and profitability.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives throughout the organization.
- Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and provide recommendations for operational improvements.
- Assist ownership with strategic planning, growth initiatives, and organizational development.
Financial Leadership
- Oversee all accounting functions, including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, payroll coordination, reconciliations, budgeting, and financial reporting.
- Ensure the accuracy and integrity of all financial records and reporting.
- Analyze financial performance and provide recommendations that improve profitability and operational efficiency.
- Develop budgets, forecasts, and cash flow projections.
- Strengthen internal controls and financial processes.
- Support project costing, job profitability analysis, equipment costing, and financial planning.
- Collaborate with ownership on financial strategy and long-term business planning.
Leadership & Culture
- Lead, mentor, and support office personnel while fostering a culture of accountability and teamwork.
- Build strong relationships across office and field operations.
- Encourage innovation, ownership, and continuous improvement throughout the organization.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, Operations Management, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of 7 years of progressive leadership experience in operations, finance, or business management.
- Construction industry experience is highly preferred. Experience with horizontal directional drilling (HDD), underground utilities, excavation, diesel equipment, fleet management, or heavy civil construction is strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of financial reporting, budgeting, construction accounting, job costing, and operational planning.
- Demonstrated success implementing business systems, policies, and process improvements.
- Exceptional leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency with QuickBooks and Microsoft Office Suite is preferred.
- Ability to balance strategic leadership with hands-on execution in a growing company.
