Job Description Summary Organization's Summary Statement: The Department of the Built Environment is seeking a skilled and motivated Laboratory Manager to join our team. This role involves providing technical support and technology, managing inventory and maintenance, and assisting students and faculty with operating laboratories and testing equipment. It also includes contributing to the maintenance, selection, development, renovation, and enhancement of laboratory facilities to ensure they meet the evolving needs of our programs. The position will report to the Department Chair. Salary Range: $60,000 - $80,000 Benefits: The University of Maryland Eastern Shore, as a University System of Maryland institution and a Maryland State agency, provides a comprehensive benefits package to all regular faculty and staff. Key Responsibilities: •Provide hands-on technical support for the labs in the Department of the Built Environment. •Develop, maintain, and operate various testing and surveying equipment across the following labs: • Construction Lab • Concrete Testing Lab • Environmental Testing Lab • Hydraulics and Fluid Mechanics Lab • Material Testing Lab • Soil Mechanics Lab • Structural Testing Lab • Surveying Lab • Welding Lab • 3D Printing Lab • Design and develop new labs as needed •Familiarity with ASTM standards and experimentation procedures. •Knowledge of OSHA’s Laboratory Standard; prepare safety guidelines and other documents relevant to the proper use of laboratory equipment. •Provide signs and kits for general safety, security, and arrangement of the laboratory area. •Develop manuals and maintain step-by-step instructions for conducting tests. •Prepare, operate, and train on experimental procedures, including the preparation of test specimens, setup, instrumentation, data acquisition, analysis, and cleanup. •Assist students and faculty to ensure students follow safe practices and receive proper training. •Aid in classroom instruction and research setup. •Provide information related to the laboratories to students, staff, and instructors. •Research and select equipment needs; order materials and supplies as necessary. •Manage shipping, handling, and installation of equipment for laboratory courses. •Assist with the fabrication, assembly, and/or repair of laboratory equipment. •Perform minor maintenance and repairs on equipment and maintain contact with appropriate vendors to coordinate repairs. •Manage and calibrate lab equipment and software; perform regular upgrades to ensure systems remain current. •Manage an inventory of spare parts and enforce practices of general laboratory organization and cleanliness. •Dispose of surplus test materials in accordance with established procedures. •Work with students individually and in groups to provide direct assistance and supervise them while working on hands-on lab projects. •Possess working knowledge of data acquisition and data processing software (e.g., LabVIEW, MATLAB). • Work closely with department faculty. •Accept a flexible schedule and work as part of a team. •This position will require moving, lifting, and carrying materials and equipment weighing up to 70 pounds, standing or sitting for extended periods, and working indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions. • •Perform other related duties as assigned by the Department Required Minimum Qualifications: •Bachelor of Science in Civil, Construction, or Mechanical Engineering (or other related areas of engineering). •Two years of relevant experience. •Familiarity with civil and construction equipment and laboratory tests. •Experience with implementing and maintaining equipment inventories and maintenance schedules. Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities •Desire and ability to work closely with faculty, instructional staff, and students in a customer support role. •Excellent verbal and written communication skills. •Ability to work cooperatively in a fast-paced environment. •Ability to work proactively with minimal supervision. Physical Demands: May be required to perform physical work requiring bending, stooping, reaching, carrying, and frequent heavy lifting; to work in adverse weather conditions; to wear and work in personal protective equipment. May require lifting up to 25 lbs. Requires communication with a variety of constituents externally and internally. Requires operation of a variety of office equipment. Experience: Three (3) years of professional laboratory experience. One (1) year of experience leading or supervising professional staff. Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education. Knowledge of the dynamics of microbiology courses. Knowledge of the development of media and other support materials. Skill in oral and written communication. Skill in the use of Microsoft Office products. Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws. Ability to multitask while demonstrating a commitment to customer service and sensitivity to a culturally and ethnically diverse community.
