Starting Hourly Wage: $30.77 - $38.46/hour; depending on experience

Role Description
The Human Resources Generalist 1 plays a key role in supporting a wide range of HR functions. This includes recruitment, onboarding, training, cross-training in benefits administration, employee relations, and fostering a positive and inclusive workplace culture.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct second interviews (in-person) with the hiring team.
- Facilitate new hire onboarding.
- Maintain Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) applicant tracking data in support of UMC’s Affirmative Action Plan.
- Support HR-led events and employee engagement initiatives.
- Respond to employment-related inquiries from candidates, employees, and supervisors, referring complex or sensitive matters as appropriate.
- Assist with updates to the Employee Handbook, including reviewing and revising policies and procedures.
- Provide guidance on company policies, employment law compliance, and leadership development.
- Collaborate with the HR Director and department leaders on workforce planning and staffing strategies.
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance; this is considered an essential function of the role.
- Review and analyze exit interview data to identify trends and recommend improvements to staffing practices.
- Assist with any other duties as assigned by HR Director.
Secondary Responsibilities:
- Maintain job descriptions to ensure they accurately reflect essential functions, required knowledge/skills/abilities (KSAs), physical and cognitive demands, and working conditions.
- Provide backup support during staff absences or periods of high demand.
- Assist the HR Director with employee relations matters, including accommodations, FMLA, and investigations.
- Support the Benefits and Compliance Specialist by ordering business cards and nameplates, as needed.
- Provide backup support to the Benefits and Compliance Specialist for data entry of new hires, employee changes, and related personnel updates.
- Manage access control systems, including key fobs and security protocols.
Required Skills and Abilities:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey information to a variety of audiences, including employees, managers, and external contacts.
- Proficiency in preparing reports, manuals, job descriptions, and HR-related policies and procedures.
- Ability to assess and respond appropriately to various workplace situations in accordance with applicable employment laws.
- Demonstrated discretion and ability to manage confidential information with professionalism.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree and 0-2 years of experience in human resources or a related field.
Required Licensing and Other Certifications:
- Professional HR certification (e.g., SPHR, PHR, SHRM-CP, or SHRM-SCP) preferred.
- Maintain a valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.
