- Intelligent – Can you learn quickly and find solutions to challenging problems?
- Innovative – Do you have ideas to improve the designs, products, and processes around you?
- Curious – Do you take things apart to see how they work? Do you study subjects on your own just because you want to understand them?
- Collaborative – Can you share ideas freely, listen to others’ ideas closely, and blend it all together to find the best solution?
- Hard working – Do you enjoy working hard and pushing through difficult challenges?
- Growth oriented – Are you driven to learn and to be better tomorrow than you are today?

- Resilient – Can you enjoy the process of making and refining new things even when your ideas are not working?
- Empirical – Are you willing to get into the lab, build prototypes, assemble hardware, and run tests to learn by experience?
- Systems thinking – Can you analyze a complex system, both as a whole and in its parts? Are you able to design and make improvements from both perspectives?
- Programming – Can you model a physical process in structured text, using developed standards and good programming practices? Can you model an HMI display that is both functional and adds value to an end user?
- Familiarity with Beckhoff’s TwinCAT software environment is highly desirable.
- Experience with Object-Oriented Programming (OOP), Test-Driven Software Development (TDD), and source control is preferred.
- Experience with performing software design reviews is also value-added.
- Electrical Design – Are you familiar with common electrical components and design standards? Can you read electrical schematics? Have you ever created schematics of your own, for someone else to follow?
- Debug – Can you use your knowledge and experience to track down bugs in code and hardware designs, using a process of review, simulation, and elimination?
- Project management – Can you manage your time and resources to stay on target for hitting your promised delivery dates? Can you hold your peers to the same high standard? Can you openly and honestly communicate your project status with your customers and leadership?
- Prototyping – Do you have innovative ideas about how to solve a manufacturing problem? Can you quickly convert those ideas into working prototypes, which you can then use to answer the unknowns in your application?
- You will be able to simulate proposed software changes, in most cases, before hardware is available.
- You will have access to the hardware and tools required to develop physical prototypes. These resources include 3D printing, CNC machining, and your other team members.
- Experience documenting your prototypes, unknowns, and lessons learned is a desirable skill.
- Electrical Design Reviews – Are you familiar enough with electrical schematics to verify the design meets the intended need? Can you give constructive and valuable feedback and corrections?
- Statistics – Can you gather empirical data from your prototypes and processes, to support your design decisions and to help your customers make important manufacturing decisions.
- Familiarity with OEE, throughput, and other manufacturing statistics is a plus.
