Job Description
The engineer in this role will work closely with our experienced team to design, develop, and implement electromechanical solutions that address real-world challenges. The engineer will perform mechanical design of parts, assemblies, and tooling for high precision positioning/motion stages. This is a 20-25 hour/week role, with at least 16 hour/week on-site at our facility located at 333 Jackson Plaza, Ann Arbor, MI.
Responsibilities
- Design mechanical parts, assemblies, and tooling for high-precision positioning and motion stages.
- Conduct design reviews; manage prototype procurement and vendor relationships.
- Testing, system integration, and stage servo tuning.
- Test and qualify stages to meet performance and reliability requirements.
- Create assembly procedures, documentation, and user guides to support transfer to manufacturing.
- Perform analyses and simulations, including structural and vibration analysis and motor current/voltage/power calculations.
- Collaborate with controls and systems engineering teams.
Must Haves
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Proficiency in structural, thermal, and vibration analysis.
- Familiarity with analysis tools and languages such as MATLAB, Python, or C .
- Experience using CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks, Magics) or other mechanical design software.
- Familiarity with software development methodologies and tools (e.g., Agile, Git).
- Authorization to work in the United States as required by the role.
- Proactive mindset and ability to adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced startup environment.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience implementing various types of rotary bearings/linear guides
- Design experience of X,Y sub-micron positioning stages
- Experience in vibration optimization and design for high stiffness to weight ratio
- Vibration and modal testing using accelerometers, impact hammer, etc.
- Experience with implementation of the use of high-resolution feedback devices such as optical encoders
- Motion control and servo tuning
- Proactive mindset and ability to adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced startup environment.
