Home Equity Loans and HELOCs
ABOUT THE ROLE
We are seeking a knowledgeable, service-focused Loan Officer to guide members through the lending process with a strong emphasis on home equity loans and home equity lines of credit (HELOCs). This position is responsible for assisting members from application through approval and closing, explaining loan options clearly, gathering required documentation, and ensuring loan files are accurate, complete, and compliant with established lending policies and applicable regulations.
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, comfortable discussing credit and collateral requirements, and committed to helping members make informed borrowing decisions while delivering professional and courteous service.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Provide members with information on available lending products, with particular focus on home equity loans, HELOCs, consumer loans, and related credit union services.
2. Assist members with home equity and HELOC applications by explaining requirements, gathering complete information, and supporting a smooth application experience by phone, online, and in person.
3. Interview applicants, initiate credit reports, review credit history, calculate debt-to-income ratios, and evaluate borrower needs within established lending guidelines.
4. Review collateral information for home equity loans and HELOCs, including property-related documentation, lien position, valuation requirements, flood determination, title information, and other file conditions as applicable.
5. Approve or deny loans within assigned authority and in accordance with credit union lending policy; present or escalate requests outside authority limits as needed.
6. Explain loan decisions, terms, payment options, rates, insurance options, and next steps clearly and professionally to members.
7. Prepare, review, and disburse lending documents; ensure loan files are complete, accurate, and ready for processing, closing, and post-closing review.
8. Maintain current knowledge of home equity lending practices, HELOC servicing considerations, credit union products, lending regulations, and internal policies.
9. Promote credit union products and services through appropriate cross-selling and member education.
10. Maintain loan files, records, and documentation in accordance with credit union standards and applicable regulatory requirements.
11. Travel to and assist at other branch locations as necessary.
12. Attend training courses, conferences, and seminars as necessary, and perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
1. High school diploma or equivalent experience required; additional coursework in business, finance, or related fields is helpful.
2. Previous lending, financial services, credit union, banking, or member/customer service experience preferred.
3. Knowledge of consumer lending, home equity lending, HELOC documentation, credit reports, collateral review, and lending compliance requirements preferred.
4. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to explain lending products and loan decisions in a clear, respectful, and member-focused manner.
5. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple loan files and deadlines accurately.
6. Intermediate mathematical skills, including calculations involving decimals, fractions, percentages, ratios, and payment-related concepts.
7. Ability to maintain confidentiality and follow established policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
