Description

The University of California San Diego is seeking qualified applicants for a Basketball Performance Coach. UC San Diego, located in La Jolla, in the San Diego Metropolitan area, enrolls over 40,000 students, earned recognition as one of the world’s premier research universities, and is ranked as one of the top-10 public universities in the nation. UC San Diego Athletics has a proud tradition of academic and athletic excellence, sponsors 24 varsity sports, and is a member of the NCAA Division 1 Big West Conference. Triton Athletics has consistently ranked as one of the most successful athletic programs through its evolution to Division 1. UC San Diego will transition its primary conference affiliation to the West Coast Conference beginning in the fall of 2027.

The Basketball Performance Coach will provide strong leadership within the Triton Performance 360 model. The primary responsibility for this Performance Coach role is for Men’s Basketball. Key functions of the role include but not limited to the following: Lead - Influential leadership of the Strength and Conditioning/Sport Science Program for Basketball; lead the Scholar-Athletes to ensure education and understanding of the Basketball S&C program and supporting Sport Science system to develop high ownership and accountability to program standards; lead, educate, and support the coaches, and health and performance staff to develop high-level program integration in-line with the Triton Performance 360 model; and lead through personal and professional connection and collaboration with all those servicing Basketball and the broader Triton Athletics community.

Coach - Strong and adaptable coaching skills across the various aspects of a Basketball S&C program including individual scholar-athlete needs. Program - Strong foundation of programming capability from annual planning and periodization to individual daily plans; from programming for the incoming Freshman through to return-to-play considerations for the Super-Senior.

Assess - Strong capability to utilize contemporary performance technologies in combination with qualitative analysis where appropriate for movement screening, periodic testing, and daily monitoring of Basketball scholar-athletes to ensure optimal preparation, performance, and injury risk mitigation.

Analyze - Implement and evolve sport science systems to deliver a data-informed evidence-based methodology across all aspects of the Basketball S&C program. Innovate - Integral member and contributor to the Triton Athletics Research Program to advance knowledge and understanding of scholar-athlete Health and Performance. Proactive in own professional development and continued learning. Draw on internal and external knowledge resources to continually challenge current methods to ensure competitive advantage for UCSD Triton Athletics.

The Performance Coach is responsible for conducting all activities in compliance with NCAA, conference, and UC San Diego rules and regulations; and will follow the athletic philosophy consistent with that of the UC San Diego Athletic Department and NCAA, and a commitment to diversity in all its forms. Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in sports science or related area and/or equivalent experience/training with a college-level program. Master's degree preferred.
  • Master's degree in sports science or related area and/or equivalent experience/training with a college-level program. Current NSCA-CSCS or CSCCa certification
  • At least two years cumulative experience working as a strength and conditioning coach for a collegiate, national or international basketball athlete and or program
  • Manage and maintain department measurement tools e.g. force plates, GPS, accelerometers, dynamometers, velocity based training (linear position transducers or accelerometers), HRV/HRR and/or other heart rate indices.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide statistical analysis and reports in regard to the specified sport. Demonstrated writing skills to prepare clearly understandable correspondence and reports.
  • Current knowledge of applicable rules and standards of the affiliated athletic conference, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) or National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), as well as other associations and agencies to which the campus adheres, and, at all times avoid any and all violations of these rules and standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to use all athletic equipment and computer software programs needed to perform job duties.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in the English language. Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact in a positive manner with diverse clientele, using a high degree of confidence, initiative, tact, diplomacy, flexibility, patience and discretion in dealing with a diverse population of students, parents, staff, supporters, campus administrators, faculty and the general public. Ability to interact effectively with others, with an affinity for networking and collaboration, while focusing on the pursuit of departmental objectives.
  • Practical experience in the assessment, testing, and monitoring of athletes to inform performance programming.
  • Demonstrated ability to use all athletic equipment and computer software programs needed to perform job duties. Applied sport science experience utilizing a data-informed evidence-based methodology.
  • Leadership skills to mentor and develop athletes. Advanced and effective inter-personal, motivational and team leadership skills to work effectively with student-athletes, staff and parents of student-athletes. Good interpersonal skills, including tact, diplomacy, and flexibility.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.
  • Work schedule will be arranged with supervisor, but includes evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • This position is a mandated reporter of known or suspected child abuse or neglect, according to the California law, Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA).
  • National Strength & Conditioning Association - Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist Certification or CSCCa certification required. First Aid CPR & AED certification required.
