DESCRIPTION

The University of California Health Milk Bank was established to help support neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) and families in the region. They do this by providing safe, pasteurized human milk that has been donated by breastfeeding parents. The UC Health Milk Bank, operated by UC San Diego Health, is the second in California to be accredited by the Human Milk Banking Association of North America. It is the only milk bank in the nation that is part of a health care system.This position is for our UC Health Milk Bank that opened in 2020. Our goals are to help mothers breastfeed, to improve breast milk donation and to ensure that all premature or ill babies in our region have access to donor milk. Under general supervision, the Outreach & Communications Coordinator supports the UC Health Milk Bank's efforts to expand community awareness, increase donor engagement, and strengthen external partnerships. Responsibilities include coordinating outreach activities, supporting marketing content development, assisting with events, conducting basic outreach research, maintaining contact databases, and providing administrative support to communications and donor engagement functions.

This position serves as a front-line representative of the Milk Bank in the community, interacting with families, healthcare providers, and partner organizations while ensuring a high level of service, professionalism, and accuracy.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Outreach & Community Engagement (50%)

  • Plans, coordinates, and attends a range of outreach events, such as Milk Bank hosted events, community events, health fairs, hospital partner activities, and donor recruitment efforts.
  • Supports relationship building with hospitals, clinics, birth centers, and community organizations.
  • Conducts follow-up communications with prospective donors, partners, and community stakeholders.
  • Provides accurate program information to the public and represents the mission, vision, and values of the Milk Bank.

2. Marketing & Communications Support (25%)

  • Drafts and edits marketing copy for social media, newsletters, flyers, educational materials, and website content.
  • Posts content to social media and helps maintain a consistent digital presence.
  • Coordinates advertising placements, content calendars, and marketing schedules.
  • Conducts research to support outreach strategy (e.g., target audiences, partner listings, local events).
  • Helps track marketing metrics and prepares summary reports.
  • Update and maintain website.

3. Administrative & Program Coordination (15%)

  • Maintains outreach and marketing files, calendars, logs, and communications databases.
  • Supports scheduling of outreach activities and partner meetings.
  • Assists with document preparation and proofreading.
  • Provides customer service support by responding to phone, email, and website inquiries.
  • Assists with coordination of donor supplies, mailings, or small-scale logistics as needed.

4. Other Duties & Cross-Functional Support (10%)

  • Collaborates with team members on donor engagement initiatives.
  • Provides backup support for donor coordinator team when needed.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Three (3) years of experience in administrative support, outreach, communications, customer service, or related work.
  • Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask under competing deadlines with strong attention to detail.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with community outreach, marketing, communications, or public relations.
  • Experience in healthcare, nonprofit, maternal/infant health, or donor-focused organizations.
  • Experience with social media management, Canva/Adobe tools, or CRM databases.
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, public health, or related field.
  • Fluent in Spanish.
  • Experience in website management.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings or weekends for outreach events.
  • This position is located at 3636 Gateway Center Ave, San Diego
  • Must pass background check and required health screenings.
  • Some local travel for community engagements required.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $61,429 - $88,030 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $29.42 - $42.16

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
