DESCRIPTION

Test, modify, repair, install and alter campus electrical systems, equipment and components (600 volts and below) including but not limited to: power circuits to offices, labs and/or mechanical spaces, motors and motor controllers, watt-hour meters, lighting systems, light poles, control devices, transformers, panels, lightening arresters and conductors to ensure building systems and equipment are operating properly. Respond to trouble calls. Make quick analysis of mechanical and electrical problems through proper troubleshooting techniques and use of various test equipment and schematics. Install metering devices to measure power consumption and to provide proper application, sizing and installation. Repair and/or replace campus lighting systems to include: street lighting, walk way and exterior building lighting. Read and interpret blueprints to diagnose electrical problems such as short circuits, tripped breakers, and overloads to ensure electrical needs are met.

Assist in resolving questions regarding services performed. Refer customer inquiries or complaints tactfully to appropriate area. Coordinate equipment repairs and shutdowns with campus members in order to ensure FM is not interfering with research or interrupting services in a disrupting manner. Plan all types of electrical construction jobs, order materials and schedule time with customer to perform work to maintain and/or improve campus systems. Maintain functional awareness of electrical hazards and participate in training sessions and seminars on safety and technical aspects of electrical trade. Maintain proficiency at current job classification level and continually update knowledge through course work, seminars, publications and contacts with others in the trade. Maintain an acceptable attendance record, punctuality and meet deadlines.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proven journey level skills and experience performing modifications, repairs, installations and alterations to utility distribution systems and components.

  • Proven journey level knowledge and experience working on a variety of control devices used in electrical, lighting and machinery systems.

  • Experience testing and troubleshooting main distribution power and correcting when necessary (600 volts and below).

  • Experience testing, troubleshooting, adjusting, synchronizing and aligning equipment machinery and electrical components.

  • Experience reading, interpreting and understanding blue prints (building, mechanical and equipment), diagrams and other technical information to perform needed adjustments and repairs.

  • Experience interpreting nameplate data and testing and troubleshooting motors, interlock system starters and control devices.

  • Experience working with and knowledge of National Electrical Code (NEC) regulations.

  • Proficiency in the use of hand tools and precision measuring devices.

  • Experienced used of standard computer systems and applications including Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe, CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System), electronic mail and web based applications.

  • Experience planning, scheduling and ordering materials for all types of electrical construction jobs.

  • Ability to document electrical changes and or new installations through written information and/or prints.

  • Experience in operating boom trucks for the repair of equipment.

  • Knowledge of and ability to use appropriate safety equipment.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, self-motivation, adaptability, tactfulness and decisiveness. Ability to work with co-workers to accomplish work with a high level of quality and efficiency.

  • Ability to prioritize workloads with minimal supervision, and plan work effectively in the field with customers and without direct supervision.

  • Ability to work effectively in a service oriented environment subject to frequently changing priorities.

  • Ability to model and advocate UCSD Principles of Community.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

  • Required to hold valid driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program.DMV check and clearance required prior to hire.

  • Must possess and maintain a State of California Certified General Electrician Card provided by the Department of Industrial Relations.

  • May be required to work overtime as needs are identified.

  • May be required to work alternate shifts.

  • Must be physically able to perform essential functions of the position; frequently lift, carry and push up to 50 lbs. Must be able to work in confined spaces.

  • Must be able to work at heights up to 100 feet.

  • Ability to work in or around morgues, gross anatomy and pathological laboratories where human and animal bodies or parts thereof may be exposed to view of the worker.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $105,841 - $105,841 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $50.69 - $50.69

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
