Job Summary
The Senior Cardiac Ultrasound Technologist (SUT) is expected to develop and maintain expert‑level proficiency with all echocardiography systems used within the Echo Lab, including equipment from multiple vendors and newly adopted technologies. This role performs comprehensive adult echocardiographic examinations across acute care, outpatient clinics, and interventional cardiology settings, including imaging support for structural heart and catheter‑based procedures. Active RDCS or RCS certification is required.
The SUT upholds the highest standards of medical ethics and demonstrates a strong commitment to continued professional development by expanding knowledge of cardiac pathophysiology, adopting emerging imaging techniques, and consistently following protocols aligned with UCDH and IAC accreditation standards. Responsibilities also include providing clinical instruction to cardiac ultrasound students and/or Cardiology Fellows at the discretion of the Echo Lab Supervisor, as well as participating in lab-sponsored demonstrations, training activities, and events as needed.
This position is scheduled Monday through Friday, with variable shifts between 6:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., and includes participation in weekend and holiday rotations. Mandatory overtime may be required to meet medical center needs. The SUT may also be assigned to perform echocardiographic procedures at CPG clinics based on operational requirements. #CA-SB

- American Registration for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) certification with applicable credential [e.g., Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS), Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS), Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT, etc.], or equivalent certification
- Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) issued by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or Registered Cardiac Sonographer issued by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI).
- Registry thru ARDMS (RDCS) or CCI (RCS) fulfills the minimum education requirement
- 3-5 years experience as a Cardiac Sonographer.
- Knowledge of Cardiac Anatomy & Physiology: Thorough understanding of cardiovascular structures, hemodynamics, and normal vs. abnormal cardiac function.
- Knowledge of Echocardiography Protocols & Accreditation Standards: Familiarity with ASE guidelines, laboratory accreditation requirements, and standardized imaging protocols.
- Knowledge of Cardiac Pathologies: Ability to identify common and complex cardiac conditions such as valve disorders, cardiomyopathies, congenital defects, and pericardial disease.
- Technical Skill in Image Acquisition & Optimization: Ability to obtain diagnostic‑quality images in accordance with established protocols, even in difficult patient scenarios.
- Strong Clinical Documentation & Reporting Skills:Ability to record accurate measurements, summarize findings, and enter data into structured reporting systems.
- Effective Communication & Patient Care Skills: Skilled in explaining procedures, reducing patient anxiety, and communicating effectively with physicians, nurses, and coworkers.
- Ability to Recognize Urgent or Critical Findings: Capable of identifying and escalating abnormal or emergent results promptly to the appropriate provider.
- Ability to Work Independently & Prioritize Workload: Able to manage multiple exams, adapt to changing priorities, and maintain workflow in a fast‑paced clinical setting.
- Proficiency in advanced echocardiographic modalities, such as 3D imaging and strain/STE analysis.
- Advanced knowledge of cardiac pathophysiology, including complex and structural heart disease and congenital abnormalities.
