Job Summary

The Interpreter/Translator for the Deaf provides a communication link between the student and the learning environment by interpreting/transliterating classroom lectures and content; provides sign to voice interpretation to enable students to participate in classroom discussions and activities; provides interpretation to facilitate students’ academic access outside of classroom hours, such as office hours, faculty appointments and tutoring sessions; may support faculty and staff members in understanding how to provide access to a deaf or hard of hearing student; works with students and the interpreting team to develop signs for scientific/technical vocabulary without established signs; may provide explanatory or additional interpretation on request; may perform other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • EIPA 4.0 or current RID Certification or NAD Level IV or Level V.
  • Graduation from high school and 60 semester units or 1200 hours of postsecondary interpreting experience, proficiency in American Sign Language and Signed English; and knowledge of the ethics of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Code of Ethics; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
  • EIPA 4.0 AND five years of professional interpreting experience or RID Certified AND three years of professional interpreting experience.
  • Expressive and receptive interpreting/transliterating skills in American Sign Language (ASL) and Conceptually Accurate Signed English (CASE) to provide thorough and accurate interpretation/transliteration in degree-related instructional activities.
  • Knowledge of various manual and oral communication styles utilized by deaf and hard of hearing persons.
  • Knowledge of scientific and other technical terms and their spellings; resourcefulness and creativity to access resources for existing technical signs and to develop logical signs to express otherwise unrepresented terms and concepts.
  • Knowledge of ethical standards, appropriate roles, and various individual responsibilities relating to auxiliary services and sign language interpreting.
  • Knowledge of the communication needs of deaf and hard of hearing people; skills to communicate this information to faculty, staff, and student peers.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Possession of current RID certification certificate in interpretation or transliteration and/or active NAD Level IV, or Level V certification
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related area such as Sign Language Interpreting, Deaf Studies, Deaf Education or American Sign Language or equivalent experience and/or training.
  • Completion of an interpreter training program with 3-5 years of post-secondary interpreting experience.
  • Knowledge of student support services and resources; skills to refer deaf or hard of hearing students to appropriate professional support member of the SDC Disability Specialists team.
  • Interpersonal skills to foster student responsibility for his/her individual needs while providing assistance with communication for limited and specific purposes.
  • Interpersonal, communication and organizational skills to maintain effective and mutually supportive working relationships with other members of the interpreting staff.
  • Ability to maintain records. Ability to effectively communicate with faculty and staff.
  • Ability to learn and apply University and Program policy concerning confidentiality of student information.

Department Overview

The Student Disability Center (SDC) within the division of Student Affairs oversees the provision of academic accommodations, adjustments, and services for approximately 4,500 disabled students to facilitate equal access to the University's educational programs. Through an interactive process, students receive specialized academic support services and adjustments, disability management counseling, academic advising specific to disability impact, and the provision of accessible/assistive technology options and training, and other resources as appropriate. This position is located in the Student Disability Center (SDC) and performs the following duties: interprets/translates for students who are deaf or hard of hearing in degree-related instructional activities. Assists with various projects as assigned.


RECRUITMENT PERIOD ONE MONTH: Applicants will be screened after two weeks; and then on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior to the removal date.

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Smoking, the use of smokeless tobacco products, and the use of unregulated nicotine products (e-cigarettes) will be strictly prohibited on any UC Davis owned or leased property, indoors and outdoors, including parking lots and residential space.

Must adjust schedule to provide interpreting services as needed. Schedule is subject to change with only 12-24 hours notification. Work flexible schedule including hours outside standard 8AM-5PM schedule. Work occasional overtime, evenings/nights, and/or weekends as needed, usually on short notice to meet operational needs. Work occasional varied lunch hours. Attire appropriate to interpreting situation is required.
