Summary

This position is part of the National Archives and Records Administration, Archival Operation Chicago.The incumbent performs non-professional, quasi-professional and technical work that supports access to archival holdings and physical and intellectual control over records. The work encompasses reference, researcher assistance and other customer services, processing, accessioning, arranging, describing, preserving, and reformatting of records.

As an Archives Technician, you will:

  • Carry out tasks in support of providing and managing reproduction services in all formats.
  • Perform a variety of functions that support high-quality reference services in research areas, including screening of records and redaction of information and materials under Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) exemptions.
  • Provide input and feedback on reference needs and finding aids.
  • Independently evaluate the physical condition of records in the course of other duties and alerts supervisor or other designated staff to condition problems that limit access or threaten the safety of records.

The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis.   • A probationary or trial period may be required. Continued employment is contingent upon supervisory certification that continued employment will benefit the Federal Service; the certification will occur no less than 30 days before the end of the probationary/trial period.
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation.
  • Complete a Declaration for Federal Employment to determine your suitability for Federal employment, at the time requested by the agency.
  • If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System or are exempt from having to do so.
  • Go through a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) process that requires two forms of identification from the Form i-9. Federal law requires verification of the identity and employment eligibility of all new hires in the U.S.
  • The work is mostly sedentary; however the incumbent must be physically able to perform the duties of this position. Physical demands may include climbing caster-equipped ladders, maneuvering on catwalks, moving heavy carts of records, and handling boxes of records stored up to 15 feet above the floor and typically weighing 50 pounds, occasionally more. The work may also demand considerable standing, walking, stooping, bending and lifting.

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

For the GS-07, specialized experience is defined as one year of experience at the GS-06 level, or equivalent, that is directly related to the position, and which has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience for this position includes:

  • Using judgement and analysis to determine the proper course of action and steps needed to accomplish an assignment; AND
  • Performing archival or related functions (Examples may include monitoring, pulling and refiling records, reference, arrangement and description, and/or holdings maintenance); AND
  • Communicating and assisting various audiences.

  • This position is a Term appointment. A Term appointment is a non-status appointment to a position in the competitive service, made for a specified period of time. The initial appointment will be greater than one year, and can be extended for no more than a total of four years.
