Summary

This position is part of the National Archives and Records Administration, Military Reference Core. The Core teams provide "World Class" customer service and are tasked with utilizing his/her technical expertise related to military records for the benefit of veterans and their families, the military services and Federal, state and local agencies.

The following are the duties of this position at the GS-06. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.

As an Archives Technician, you will:

  • Respond to a variety of types of requests for information regarding military service.
  • Conduct the initial review of incoming requests, which may include inquiries that involve fire destroyed or damaged records, Congressional inquiries, and/or highly sensitive requests regarding high-ranking governmental officials.
  • Analyze requests for information to identify the scope of inquiry.
  • Investigate conflicting record information, apparent errors, and/or omissions of record data.
  • Participate as a team member in a variety of functions as determined by team decisions.

The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. To ensure full credit for your work experience, please indicate dates of employment by month/day/year, and indicate number of hours worked per week on your resume.

  • A probationary or trial period may be required. Continued employment is contingent upon supervisory certification that continued employment will benefit the Federal Service; the certification will occur no less than 30 days before the end of the probationary/trial period.
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation.
  • Complete a Declaration for Federal Employment to determine your suitability for Federal employment, at the time requested by the agency.
  • If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System or are exempt from having to do so.
  • Go through a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) process that requires two forms of identification from the Form i-9. Federal law requires verification of the identity and employment eligibility of all new hires in the U.S.
  • The work is normally sedentary, with the exception of walking response documents to the requester's location on the same floor of the building. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

Specialized Experience for the GS-05: You must have at least one year of experience at the GS-04 level or equivalent that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience for this position includes:

  • Communicating to customer inquires, verbally or in writing; AND
  • Using computer systems to locate items and/or using documentation to identify information relevant to a work assignment.

OR

  • EDUCATION: You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows: 4 years above high school.

OR

  • COMBINATION: You may qualify by a combination of experience and education.

NOTE: Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.
