Summary

You will serve as a MAINTENANCE MECHANIC LEADER in the PRODUCTION RESOURCES DEPARTMENT 900 of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

Help

  • You will serve as a worker leader charged with exercising leadership over subordinate workers in accomplishing work within shops and/or mixed trades.
  • You will maintain close observations of all work operations to ensure proper adherence to procedures and guideline.
  • You will perform a variety of tasks involved in the servicing and upkeep of vessels and maintenance of radiologically controlled buildings.
  • You will prepare, pack, and transfer radiological material in accordance with Norfolk naval Shipyard Nuclear Program.
  • You will coordinate work while assuring proper inter-trade and inter-shop coordination with high levels of quality assurance completed timely.
  • You will update the first line supervisor of job progress; as well as technical, material, equipment needs and job performance.
  • You will be responsible for proper use of prescribed work methods and procedures as well as the efficient use of personnel and equipment.

  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • The incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a radiological worker qualification, and the inability to do so will result in removal.

Qualifications

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO LEAD OR SUPERVISE:

  • Experience working in at least two of the following trade occupations: electrical, plumbing, HVAC, pipefitting, carpentry, painting, and/or insulation.
  • Experience installing and operating electrical fixtures, wiring, and controls and reading and following wiring diagrams.
  • Experience constructing, operating, and servicing a variety of ventilation systems, and possibly power sources, and cooling units.
  • Experience installing and operating various supply, disposal, and utility systems and equipment, such as water and gas systems, fire sprinkler equipment, and water closets.
  • Experience planning and laying out the installation, modification, and repair of various new and existing piping systems and equipment.
  • Experience operating general and precision carpentry and woodworking equipment to produce the requested finished product.
  • Experience matching, tinting, toning, and blending coating materials and agents.
  • Experience applying mechanical theory, pneumatic, and hydraulic principles to repair electromechanical devices.
  • Experience applying principles and theories of the refrigeration cycle, temperature measurement, and refrigerant properties.
  • Experience working with various high-pressure piping systems and equipment.
  • Experience interpreting complex instructions, sketches, blueprints, and building codes.
  • Experience reading and applying directions to various materials, solvents, and pre-coating agents.

You must be able to perform work, without close supervision, in at least two or more of the following trade practices: electrical, air-conditioning, plumbing, pipefitting, carpentry, painting, and insulation.

Incumbent will be subjected to protracted or irregular hours of work.

This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.
