Summary

This position is located within Engineering Service - Bay Pines VAHCS - Lee County Healthcare Center - Cape Coral - Florida. The primary purpose of this position is to perform maintenance on a wide variety of equipment and systems at the Lee County Healthcare Center.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position - applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required - but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge - skills - and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element - which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Equipment Assembly - Installation - Repair Interpret Instructions - Specifications (includes blueprint reading) Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Without more than normal supervision Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience - including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. - Peace Corps - AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g. - professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies - knowledge - and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience - including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Duties

  • Duties include - but are not limited to: Maintenance - repair - and modification of equipment with hydraulic - pneumatic - mechanical - electrical - or electronic systems - features - or controls designed for such purposes as construction - materials handling - housekeeping - firefighting - and comparable industrial or special applications
  • Overhauls and repairs a wide range of makes - models and types of mechanical - electrical and office equipment - non-biomedical equipment - and equipment that are used-for equipment handling - outdoor maintenance or special features or controls designed for a specific purpose using independent judgment and decisions - and the work does not require review by the supervisor
  • Maintenance - repair - and overhaul of combustion-powered diesel generators - Patient shuttles - and comparable vehicles - such as forklifts - pumps - pressure washers - floor care equipment and other related support equipment
  • Installs or repairs electromechanical and plumbing systems incident to the construction or maintenance of Lee County Healthcare Center buildings - equipment - exam rooms - Operating Rooms - offices - or shops
  • Receive written instruction - oral instructions - and plumbing diagrams that indicate the nature of the repair or installation to be made - the layout and placement of infrastructure - fixtures - and controls - and the types of components - parts - and equipment installed
  • Removes - replaces - tightens - splices - solders and insulates defective wiring - controls - equipment and fixtures
  • Locate defective parts/equipment through visual observation or through the use of test equipment (e.g
  • test lamps - voltage testers - ammeters and polarity testers)
  • Cleans and replaces filters - screens - battery cables - and engine components
  • Cleans - removes - adjusts - and replaces defective parts and components
  • Cleans - removes - adjusts and replaces complete systems and components
  • He/she repairs equipment such as sewage - water - oil - and gas distribution systems and water closets - tubs - fire sprinkler systems - and showers
  • Works from building plans - blueprints - and sketches - to plan and lay out the routing - placement - slant - slope - fall - and proper operation - of systems and equipment
  • He/she uses tools and equipment such as plumb bobs - mercury gauges - dividers - closet augers - hydrostatic pumps - and lead pots
  • Install plumbing systems
  • Installs - modifies - and repairs systems by locating and tapping main Lines - setting up system routes - placing and cutting route openings - placing hangers for proper level and slope
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 6:30am-3:00pm Position Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Worker/PD10718O Physical Requirements: Incumbent works in tiring positions for prolonged periods
  • Also - works in frequent standing - bending - stooping - crouching and arm movement positions
  • Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 45 pounds
  • He/she may occasionally lift heavier items with assistance
  • Working Conditions: Work both in and outdoors
  • Incumbent frequently exposed to drafts - changing temperatures - dust - grease - heat - fumes and noise
  • Work in bad weather - in mud or snow and in wet or icy areas
  • Subject to cuts - burns - chemical irritations - and bruises
  • Follow prescribed safety practices and use safety equipment such as protective hearing devices - hard hats - and hard toed shoes.
