WRAIR Biomedical Technology Transfer Fellowship

U.S. Department of Defense (DOD)
Silver Spring, MD Intern
POSTED ON 7/24/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 9/24/2026

The Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) is DoD's premier research enterprise for infectious diseases, brain health, and performance optimization. WRAIR’s Office of Research and Technology Applications is offering an educational opportunity focused on the discovery, design, development and delivery of globally impactful solutions for military relevant infectious diseases, brain health, and performance optimization through innovative research and product development. Progress toward these medical solutions requires that the breakthroughs and the knowledge garnered by government scientists must be shared with scientists in academia, private research groups and the pharmaceutical industry for broadest commercial application, production or manufacture. This fellowship offers you an immersive opportunity to learn about the federal Government’s role in advancing scientific innovation and technology transfer.

What will I be doing and why should I apply?

WRAIR’s Office of Research and Technology Applications is primarily focused on the policies and laws that drive technology transfer for biomedical product development at Federal Laboratories.  As the selected candidate, you will learn about the development of technology transfer agreements that enable WRAIR's access to research resources (e.g., through material or information exchange and collaboration). You will learn and gain experience from Government agencies who are driving innovation across diverse portfolios of research and development.

Under the guidance of a mentor, you will learn and gain experience in the following:

  • Learn how WRAIR develops and executes agreements like confidential disclosure agreements, material transfers agreements, cooperative research and development agreements and clinical trials agreements to support scientific advancement.
  • Learn how to assess scientific inventions for patenting, licensing, and marketing while gaining insights into intellectual property strategies and aligning technologies with societal needs.
  • Evaluate and review new WRAIR inventions reported by WRAIR scientists for potential patenting or licensing.
  • Analyze WRAIR patent portfolios and develop a comprehensive understanding of scientific portfolios in the biomedical field.
  • Learn scientific patenting strategies to enhance your knowledge of intellectual property systems and the role of patents in advancing innovation.
  • Identify inventions for submission into the Invention Evaluation Committee (IEC).
  • Develop scientific relationships across federal and non-federal entities.

Where will I be located?

Silver Spring, Maryland with an option to participate off-site as needed and approved.

What is the anticipated start date?

WRAIR is ready to make appointments immediately. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.

What is the appointment length?

This is a twelve-month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

What are the provisions?

Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by WRAIR. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other provisions may include the following:
  • Health Insurance Supplement. Participants are eligible to purchase health insurance through ORISE.
  • Training and Travel Allowance
