The Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR), DoD's premier research enterprise for infectious diseases, brain health, and performance optimization, is offering a post-master's level research fellowship.
What will I be doing and why should I apply?
As the selected applicant and under the guidance of a mentor, you will engage with the biomedical research library within the Gorgas Memorial Library (GML). You will gain technical experience while learning how to access and utilize scientific resources, specifically the biomedical research resources that underpin WRAIR’s global biomedical research efforts. These include, but are not limited to:
- Learning about biomedical research resources, including digital and physical collections, for the Gorgas Memorial Library (GML).
- Developing skills in troubleshooting access issues and ensuring seamless connectivity to library databases and research materials.
- Conducting supporting literature reviews, citation management, and evidence-based research for the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR).
- Understanding methodologies for locating, evaluating, and synthesizing scientific information to support global biomedical initiatives.
- Gaining hands-on experience in library databases and metadata creation to enhance resource discoverability.
- Learning to implement and optimize AI tools for improving search tools and reducing errors in information retrieval processes.
- Understanding how biomedical research resources advance the Command’s global biomedical mission, including support for preclinical and clinical research.
- Creating innovative solutions to enhance resource availability and usability.
- Exploring the interplay between library sciences and research methodologies in supporting robust scientific inquiry.
- Learning how artificial intelligence can be leveraged appropriately to streamline literature reviews, identify gaps in research, and improve decision-making.
- Understanding the ethical considerations and limitations of AI, such as hallucination reduction, in scientific contexts.

What is the anticipated start date?
WRAIR is ready to make appointments with a start date in early July. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis, and fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.
What is the appointment length?
This is a twelve-month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

About WRAIR
The Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) aims to conduct biomedical research that is responsive to U.S. Department of Defense and U.S. Army requirements. WRAIR conducts basic science, applied science, and animal and human subjects research to deliver lifesaving products including knowledge, technology and medical material that sustain the combat effectiveness of the Warfighter. About ORISE
This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
