Qualifications:
Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including selective placement factor and education, as defined below.
ELIGIBILITY: Students who are currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment on at least a half-time basis at a qualifying educational institution in a certificate, degree, or diploma program.
SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR: Students must be enrolled in a degree seeking program at the undergraduate level in pre-veterinary, biomedical science, veterinary medical science, animal science, public health, or a closely related field of study. Undergraduate level students are expected to pursue a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) at an accredited veterinary school or college within the United States upon graduation from bachelor's program.
Applicants can qualify by meeting the EDUCATION requirements specified below.
EDUCATION:
GS-4: Completion of 2 full academic years (60 semester or 90 quarter hours) of post-high school study or an associate's degree.
GS-5: Completion of 4 academic years of post-high school leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree.
Upon graduation, you must meet the following education requirement to be eligible for conversion to a position in the 0701 series: Veterinary Medical Officer (VMO), GS-0701 series:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree, i.e., Veterinary Medical Doctor (VMD), obtained at a school or college of veterinary medicine accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education (AVMA). What Does the Saul T. Wilson, Jr. Internship Program Offer You?
The Saul T. Wilson, Jr. Internship Program is designed to recruit students enrolled in veterinary medicine to Veterinary Services critical positions.
The internship program provides financial assistance for the student up to a maximum of $20,000 per year for undergraduate studies and $40,000 per year for graduate level to the student's institution for tuition, books, tutors, laboratory fees.
Employment while attending school: A minimum of 480 hours of paid employment during the course of your Internship for Pathways work requirements. The work requirements must be completed prior to, or concurrent with, the completion of Saul T. Wilson, Jr. Internship educational requirements, to be considered for possible conversion, without further competition, to a permanent appointment with APHIS upon successful completion of degree, training, and other work requirements.
Upon completing Pathways educational, training and work experience requirements, and within 180 days of meeting Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree requirements, internship students may be converted to career or career-conditional appointment in the target permanent position as a Veterinary Medical Officer. Students agree to provide one (1) year of service for each school year of financial support received by the Saul T. Wilson, Jr. Internship Program.This Internship confers eligibility for a noncompetitive conversion to a permanent Veterinary Medical Officer, GS-0701, position with promotion potential to at least the GS-12 level contingent upon meeting all applicable Internship Program requirements and the needs of the agency. Appointment to the GS-13 level may be considered if completion of Ph.D. degree in a Veterinary Medicine specialty.
You will be considered for conversion to a permanent position upon the successful completion of your Internship. However, please note that eligibility for conversion does not guarantee the agency will opt for conversion.
