What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Inverter Controls Engineer – Power Electronics, min 5 years experience, NOT PLC position at TWIG Power?
Company Overview
TWIG Power is a start up company focused on the North American solutions for electrification, powertrain, and power generation. Our technology aligns with state of the art automotive to set a high quality standard and a platform approach to enable right sized products of high value. Applications include light electric powertrain, energy storage, power conversion, and back up power, and other customer driven solutions. Our products leverage best in class technology that are developed at the pace of innovation. Based on TWIG (the whole is greater) philosophy, products are designed in-house or jointly with customers to create something that is greater than the sum of its parts. With in-house and close partner manufacturing, key elements of supply chain and design for manufacturing are integral to our success.
Position Summary
This is a power electronics controls role, not a PLC, SCADA, or factory automation role.
This position drives power electronics control development for products based on three-phase inverter technology. Power conversion (AC/DC and DC/AC) and traction motor control solutions will be developed, as well as general system and supervisory controllers for power generation and powertrain systems.
The immediate focus is a funded, clean-sheet MW-class inverter program for power generation, with a validated prototype due in 12–15 months. You will work to a control architecture developed jointly with our power electronics architect, own the algorithm development and validation that realizes it, and partner with our embedded team on target implementation.
Core Responsibilities
- Drive system definition through plant modeling and formal requirements capture
- Develop and verify control algorithms in a model-based workflow, structured for production code generation
- Design models and interfaces that hand off cleanly to embedded implementation
- Own validation and calibration from simulation through HIL to end product
- Translate control architecture from the power electronics architect into implementable, verifiable requirements
- Partner with embedded firmware and code generation engineers through integration and bring-up
- Extend the control platform across power generation, conversion, and traction applications
Required Qualifications
- BS/MS in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or Computer Science
- Minimum 5 years of industry experience developing inverter control algorithms, automotive or industrial
- Proven success deploying production inverter control software, including field oriented control, space vector modulation, and harmonic cancellation
- Model-based design structured for production code generation
- MATLAB/Simulink/Simscape
- Plant modeling and loop tuning validated against measured hardware, not simulation alone
- Control validation and calibration on real hardware, including HIL
- High voltage system experience and safe working practice
- Electronics bench testing and instrumentation
- Proven ability to carry a control design into a production solution
Preferred Qualifications
- Electric powertrain and/or power generation experience
- Four-wire, four-leg, or grid-tied converter exposure
- Genset, microgrid, or utility interconnection familiarity
- Functional safety development experience (ISO 26262 or IEC 61508)
- Hands-on experience with embedded targets and real-time scheduling constraints
- SiC power stages at hundreds of kW and above
- Requirements management and formal verification tooling
Why This Role
Clean-sheet control development on a funded, awarded MW-class program — not sustaining engineering. Small team, direct ownership, short path from algorithm to running hardware, and a platform that carries forward into the next generation of products.
