Brief Job Summary

Reporting directly to the Vice President for Student Affairs and Retention, the Dean of Student Affairs serves as one of the primary professional contacts for the Office of Student Affairs and is responsible for the supervision of student life community spaces (The Perk, Wellness Center, etc.) and supervises the Student Affairs federal work-study students. This position will also oversee conduct, intramurals, and Student Wellness and Resources. The Dean of Students is responsible for assisting students personally by assessing needs and connecting students to appropriate campus resources such as Financial Aid, Mental Health Counseling, Student Support Services, the Tutoring Center, ADA accommodations, or others as needed.

Education/Experience

  • Minimum education level required: Master’s Degree
  • Earned educational credentials preferred within (but not limited to) the following disciplines: college student personnel, higher education administration, counseling, or related fields;
  • Experience in student engagement and retention, educational programming, staff supervision, and management
  • Knowledge of University disciplinary systems, crisis response systems, and relevant legal issues
  • Background in advising/counseling students
  • Experience working with underrepresented and/or minority student populations.

Essential Functions

  • Supports and promotes the mission, vision, values, and strategic plan of Tusculum University
  • Provide supervision and support for work-study student staff.
  • Supervise and facilitate conduct processes and maintain accurate, thorough student conduct records.
  • Provide oversight for the Student Affairs judicial process (Major Conduct); Create and supervise the student judicial board. Facilitate student judicial hearings and maintain accurate and thorough student conduct records
  • Recruit, develop, and implement training programs for all student work study staff
  • Monitor and maintain effective resourcing for student life community spaces (The Perk, Wellness Center, Intramurals, etc.)
  • Serve as the primary supervisor for Student Affairs Federal Work- Study students
  • Respond to students’ socio-emotional needs and make referrals to available campus resources
  • Select, supervise, and evaluate Pioneer Peers (WOW).

  • Oversee the Week of Welcome committee
  • Collaborate with the VPSAR to refer students to the Americans with Disabilities Act compliance officer to obtain reasonable accommodations; maintain accurate documentation of approved accommodations relevant to Student Affairs
  • Assist in carrying out daily Office of Student Affairs functions;
  • Promotes the mission of Tusculum University to all faculty, staff, students, and the community at large.

  • Strong computer literacy, particularly with Microsoft Office applications, and student information systems.

Physical Requirements

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment. You may be required to work occasional irregular hours, including some nights and weekends.
  • Able to lift up to 25 pounds on occasion.
  • Communicate effectively.
  • Must be able to walk distances, sit or stand for long periods of time, and climb stairs.
  • Ability to talk and hear.
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to travel when necessary.
