Job Overview
Responsible for direction and overall supervision of a group of preschool children. Performs activities that ensure the safety, involvement, and creativity of each individual in the group. Works cooperatively with the lead teacher to discuss and aide in the implementation of daily plans in accordance with the current curriculum, incorporating the Ohio Department of Education Standards. Assistant teachers are under the supervision of the Lead teacher and must complete all tasks assigned by the supervisor. Failure to do, the Associate Executive Director, and the CEO and the Preschool Coordinator will discuss disciplinary action and/or termination procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Teacher Role in the Classroom
  • In the event the Lead teacher is absent, Assistant teachers must step up and teach the classroom based on the lesson plans. Teachers' Assistants must teach at least two days a month while the lead teacher observes.
  • Completion of Child Portfolios
  • Child Portfolios must contain the following items: two self- portraits, four writing samples, four drawing samples, four painting samples, two pictures of building structures, two pictures of playing dramatic play center. Two anecdotal notes must be documented for each child from each developmental area each month by the end of the school year. This would result in 112 Anecdotal Notes for the school months September- April per child.
  • Works cooperatively with Lead Teacher, Site Administrator, other staff and partners.
  • Documents attendance, absenteeism, transitions, minor disciplines and incidents for each child in the classroom.
  • Preparing Classroom Materials
  • Assistant teachers are responsible for collecting all materials and have them ready prior to the class day based on the teacher's lesson plans. Assistant teachers should review lessons plans daily to know what to expect. If there are materials that are needed, please contact the preschool coordinator the Friday before the materials are needed.
  • Is responsible for all aspects of the appearance and management of their classroom/designated program/outside areas. Maintains the quality of supplies, materials, and equipment in the room in a neat and orderly fashion.
  • Cleaning the Classroom
  • Assistant teachers must clean and sanitize the classroom daily. Follow the Daily Routine Cleaning checklist for assistance.
  • Reports any broken or unsafe toys and properly disinfects with toys and equipment on a regular basis in accordance with the state regulations.
  • First Aid Kit Inventory
  • Teachers' assistants must complete the First Aid Kit Inventory by the 15 of each month. Please notify Preschool Coordinator of any necessary materials that need to be replaced or restocked.
  • Conducts the program in accordance with Ohio Department of Children and Youth (DCY) guidelines.
  • Handles discipline promptly and in accordance with the stated discipline policy. Documents and reports to the supervisor any special needs or problems of an individual child, staff or parent.
  • Attends in-service training events as required by Department of Children and Youth (DCY) regulations, continued professional development through community involvement, online trainings, reading and/or further education.
  • Maintains appropriate records for consumers.
  • Maintains appropriate certifications and records for YMCA and OCCRRA.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Be available for working scheduled school day’s off and snow days in addition to preschool hours.

Skills

  • Experience working with children in various settings such as daycare, preschool, or special education environments.
  • Knowledge of child welfare practices and early intervention techniques.
  • Communication skills for interacting effectively with children, parents, and colleagues.
  • Ability to foster a positive learning atmosphere that encourages curiosity and exploration.
