 General Summary:

Locates and marks buried copper, coax, and fiber plant, clearly marking the route and exposing when necessary.  Fulfills timely locate requests.  The candidate must be flexible to work in all types of terrain and weather conditions, able to succeed in stressful situations, and conduct him or herself in a professional manner at all times.  The candidate must also be motivated to work independently and demonstrate good time management skills to plan and accomplish assigned workload as required. 

 Essential Job Functions:

The essential job functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Locates buried copper, coax and fiber plant, marking the route and exposing when necessary.  Fulfills locate requests in a timely manner, reading utility prints, contacting city entities, utility companies, homeowners, landlords and contractors.   
  • Updates locate ticket tickets in the 811 positive response system to reflect the status of the locate request.
  • Using locating equipment, determines location of buried fiber, coax, or copper plant.  Confirms plant marked on maps are accurate and notify Engineering if changes or updates need to be made.  
  • Correctly and consistently wears safety gear, and operates safety equipment as provided.
  • Ability to function effectively as a team player.
  • Ability to negotiate with property owners, city personnel, utility companies and contractors.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as maps, blueprints, schematics, staking sheets and operating/maintenance instruction manuals.
  • Ability to kneel, crawl, and stoop to locate and mark plant.
  • Will be required to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • MUST possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.  A clean and safe driving record is required.  DOT Medical Certification may be required.
  • May participate in team’s ON CALL rotation which may include nights, weekends and holidays.  
  • May be required to perform duties after normal business hours – (overtime).
  • Performs all other related duties assigned by management.

  • Computer Skills – Possesses solid operating knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Job Knowledge – Must have a solid understanding of networking fundamentals.   
  • Flexibility – Must be able to work outside normal business hours when necessary.

 

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.  
  • 3-5 years of experience with telecommunications, locating experience preferred.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Must pass pre-employment background check, to include driver history, medical and drug test, and criminal history.
  • Must be capable of working in all temperatures, climates, and weather conditions.

 While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is regular required to use hands or fingers; handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.  The employee is required to operate a motor vehicle on a daily basis. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.  Must be available to occasionally work after normal business hours, based on the needs of the company.

At times, could be disagreeable working conditions due to continuous and intensive exposure to three or more objectionable elements including weather, dust and noise.
