Principal Research & Development Engineer
Location: Highland, IL
Pay: $131,000 – $150,500 per year
Job Type: Full-Time
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Work Arrangement: Onsite initially, with opportunity for a hybrid schedule (2 days remote)
About the Role
We are seeking a highly experienced Principal Research & Development Engineer to lead advanced engineering projects focused on electrical power systems, protection, and control design. This role is ideal for a technical leader who thrives on innovation, problem-solving, and developing cutting-edge solutions within the power systems industry.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the planning, development, and execution of complex R&D projects related to electrical power systems
- Design and develop protection and control systems, including embedded applications and algorithms
- Create engineering specifications, system models, and proposals for new and existing products
- Perform simulations and power system studies to support design and customer needs
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical challenges using innovative approaches
- Direct design validation through simulations and prototype testing
- Document design processes, including theory of operation and test data
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams and provide technical guidance to engineers and technicians
- Interface directly with customers and represent engineering efforts in meetings, presentations, and industry events
- Support product development, business opportunities, and application engineering efforts as needed
- Travel occasionally to support projects and customer engagements
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or equivalent required
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in electrical power systems, protection, and control design or analysis
- Strong knowledge of power systems modeling, simulation tools, and control systems
- Experience developing protection and control algorithms and embedded system applications
- Proven ability to lead projects and supervise engineering teams
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical information clearly
- Proficiency with standard computer and engineering software tools
