Entry-Level Apprentice Hunting Guide Position

Western Montana Big Game Hunting Outfitter

Position Overview

We are looking for a hardworking, dependable entry-level apprentice to join our Western Montana big game outfitting operation. This is a hands-on position for someone who wants to learn the outfitting and guiding trade from the ground up. The right person will be willing to work hard, take direction, spend long days outdoors, and do what needs to be done to keep facilities, trails, livestock, equipment, and hunts running smoothly.

This position is intended for someone who wants to build a future in the outfitting industry. The employee will learn the trade while working toward a permanent guide position if they prove dependable, capable, and a good fit for the operation.

Job Duties

· Clear and maintain trails in hunting areas and backcountry access routes.

· Scout hunting areas, glass for game, read sign, and help prepare for the season.

· Put out, check, and retrieve game cameras.

· Care for livestock, including feeding, watering, grooming, and general day-to-day animal care.

· Saddle stock and help prepare horses and mules for rides into the backcountry.

· Ride horses into remote areas as part of scouting, packing, and hunting operations.

· Drive trucks and trailers safely, including hauling livestock, gear, supplies, and equipment.

· Build and repair fences, corrals, gates, and other ranch or outfitting needs.

· Assist with field care of harvested game and pack out meat.

· Maintain equipment, facilities, vehicles, tack, tools, and work areas.

· Help with general labor as needed before, during, and after hunting season.

· Possibly guide hunters if you have the right experience, judgment, and ability.

What We Are Looking For

· Strong work ethic and willingness to learn.

· Dependable, honest, and able to follow directions.

· Comfortable working long days outdoors in rugged mountain country and changing weather.

· Physically able to hike, ride, lift, pack, and perform demanding labor.

· Comfortable around horses, mules, livestock, trucks, trailers, tools, and firearms.

· Experience hunting, riding, packing, ranching, fencing, and working in the backcountry is helpful but not required for the right person.

· Good attitude around clients, coworkers, and livestock.

· Respect for wildlife, the land, clients, safety, and ethical hunting practices.

Opportunity for Advancement

This is an apprentice position with the goal of training the right employee to move into a permanent guide role. If you work hard, show good judgment, learn the country, handle livestock responsibly, and represent the outfit well, there may be an opportunity to move into a long-term guide position.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is someone who wants to make a career in the outfitting and hunting industry, is not afraid of hard work, and understands that good guides are built through experience, responsibility, and time in the field. This job is a chance to learn by doing and earn more responsibility as you prove yourself.
